Final report of an examination of the mechanism and kinetics of the enzymatic hydrolysis process. The study compares several substrates and enzymes in hydrolysis systems and provides a framework for optimizing hydrolysis engineering analysis and reactor design. The report describes experimental studies of the kinetic factors that govern the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose by cellulase enzymes; experimental and modelling studies of hydrolysis systems, giving the results of six assays combined into a model of hydrolysis with no arbitrary assumptions; verifies the model predictions with experimental data; compares the experimental data for a wide variety of hydrolysis reactors; and evaluates a variety of designs for hydrolysis reactor systems. Cellulosic substrates used include Sigmacell, a pure, highly crystalline commercial cellulose; Acid-Swollen Cellulose, an amorphous material made from Sigmacell; and Exploded Wood Cellulose, a crystalline lignocellulose.
