"Accurate and fully explicit mathematical models and derivations make the proposed method truly universal irrespective of the geographical location and the kind of virus epidemic." Minvydas Ragulskis, Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania The effects of a pandemic on public, personal and freight transport can be sudden and massive, and yet transport is vital to the functioning of an advanced economy and society. On the other hand, transport, due to social mobility, has a decisive influence on the speed and scope of epidemic spread. This book presents a complete methodology for assessing the hazards, and probability and risks of viral transmission on transport services, using as a detailed example the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic. It gives proposals and recommendations for estimating human deaths caused by virus infection in transport. Significantly, it considers not only passenger transport but also freight transport, such as delivery or parcel services. The tools include a matrix of hazard assessment in various transportation services, with a methodology for estimating the probability of virus transmission through both droplets and surface contact. These allow estimation of the effects of infections and consequent epidemic risk in all kinds of transport services, including freight, and provide methods for forecasting and risk management which determine transport safety. Rafał Burdzik is a professor in the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering at Silesian University of Technology, Poland, with more than 20 years of transport research experience.

Transportation Amid Pandemics: Practices and Policies is the first reference on pandemics (especially COVID-19) in the context of transport, logistics, and supply chains. This book investigates the relationships between pandemics and transport and evaluates impacts of COVID-19 and effects of policy responses to address them. It explores how to recover from pandemics, reveals governance for immediate policy responses and future innovations, suggests strategies for post-pandemic sustainable and resilient development, shares lessons of COVID-19 policymaking across countries, and discusses how to transform transport systems for a better future. Transportation Amid Pandemics offers transport researchers and policymakers the scientific evidence they need to support their decisions and solutions against pandemics. "Curiosity and research brought me to discover an excellent handbook covering the relations between COVID 19 and the transport reality. It is called "Transportation amid Pandemics –Lessons Learned from COVID-19" and has been published this year. 2022 happens to be the year of the 50th anniversary of the first report to The Club of Rome "The Limits to Growth". The new book covers evidences from all over the world, and offers policy recommendations from a great variety of perspectives". Ernst Ulrich von Weizsaecker Represents the collective efforts of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) Uniquely deals with intertwined issues of pandemics and transport Investigates both successful and problematic policy measures Emphasizes bvidence-based policymaking from cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary perspectives Transfers lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to future generations

In light of the novel corona virus outbreak in December 2019 and its subsequent impact on entire world as a global pandemic, the book attempts to provide integrated risk assessment on Covid -19 like pandemics, as well as to understand the societal, environment and economic impact of the outbreak in various sectors of development. It covers fundamental factors of global disease outbreaks and its coverage as major disaster through the complexity and severity of consequences, illustrating the dimensions of low frequency high intensity disasters. It brings together broad range of topics including basic concepts, isolation measure, role of governance and key technical advancements for containing the diseases. In addition, it also covers resilience analysis towards the impacts such outbreaks have on bio-diversity, ecosystem services and agricultural food production. It defines key exit strategies from the lessons learned and success stories of historical disease outbreaks. The book is presented in four parts, where part 1 familiarizes with fundamentals; part 2 focuses on integrated risk assessments; part 3 focuses on various measures and strategies of resilience; and part 4 suggests key lessons and recommendations. The book is a useful reading reference for scientific community, policy makers and professionals across the domains of health, environment, disasters and sustainable development. Book is specifically beneficial for postgraduate students, researchers, planners and field professionals.

Under and post COVID-19 conditions, companies are adapting to smart ways of operating and managing logistics processes to counteract the negative implications of the pandemic. This book offers an analysis and guidance on how to manage these processes, including transport, inventory, operations and waste management, to meet the complex need of enterprises. This edited collection presents selected and key aspects of the implementation of logistics processes in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, enriched with empirical analyses and international examples. The book is a contribution to the considerations on the role and importance of logistics processes in the management of organisations in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as reducing its negative socio-economic and technological effects. With contributions from global scholars, the book demonstrates the direction in which logistics processes should change so that they can take the form of "smart". Logistics, Transport and the COVID-19 Crisis will be directly relevant for researchers and academics across logistics, supply chain management, and transport management as well as risk management and related fields.

This paper introduces a simple, frequently and easily updated, close to the data epidemiological model that has been used for near-term forecast and policy analysis. We provide several practical examples of how the model has been used. We explain the epidemic development in the UK, the USA and Brazil through the model lens. Moreover, we show how our model would have predicted that a super infectious variant, such as the delta, would spread and argue that current vaccination levels in many countries are not enough to curb other waves of infections in the future. Finally, we briefly discuss the importance of how to model re-infections in epidemiological models.

An interesting study of risk identification related to the recent recession which hit UK in the third quarter of 2008.Recession not only accentuated certain risks already existing in freight transport in the past but also led to the emergence of new ones during and post-recession. This research is thus an attempt to identify and assess the risks faced by freight companies during recession and suggest mitigation strategies to deal with such risks in future. The study reveals that risks related to recession will become more intense in future, however preparedness and tested mitigation strategies can help to lessen or nullify their impact on freight companies.

Epidemic Risk Reduction written by Pawel Gromek and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-04 with Political Science categories.

Epidemic Risk Reduction: A Civil Protection Approach focuses on disaster risk reduction (DRR) relative to epidemic outbreak and the concept of civil protection and public safety. First and foremost, the primary role of public officials and agencies—including police, military, public health, and emergency management and response professionals—must be the safety and security the citizens. The book provides practical solutions and policies that can be enacted and instituted to protect human life and health as well as property and environment in the scope of human survival, providing essential services, and providing for peoples’ basic needs. The author examines epidemics as disasters, similar to natural hazards or other large-scale events that require planning, preparedness, mitigation, and response. The approach is unique in looking at tools for risk assessment and strategic planning formulated around civil protection measures as a means to reduce and mitigate risk. Often, preparedness and response planning is siloed with an epidemiological and medical response at the forefront. While absolutely important and essential, doing so—in conjunction with coordinated government efforts to provide necessary supplies, security, and logistics—is equally critical to meet the public’s needs and provide a coordinated response. Key Features: Examines the phenomenon of epidemics and hazards, explaining that they are often multi-hazard Provides public leaders with various considerations to meet the challenge of managing the complexity of various threat vectors Details universal terms and definitions—e.g., disaster, risk, and epidemic—using diagrams, illustrations, and analogies to clearly explain critical concepts Presents epidemic risk reduction strategies—based on the lead role that disaster, emergency management, and state/civil authorities need to play—focusing primarily on individual health and security Epidemic Risk Reduction: A Civil Protection Approach establishes a common language which will help in overcoming barriers for more coordinated efforts focused on epidemic management and operational response. While drawing on current research, and based on theoretical knowledge, the book also provides practical examples from around the world that look at real-world response efforts. This includes recommendations on how politicians, crisis response personnel, emergency planners, and public administrators and health professionals can better plan and prepare for future epidemics.
