La segunda casaca es la tercera novela de la segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. Galdós nos retrata con gran precisión en este episodio nacional uno de los vicios políticos más antiguos, el transfuguismo o lo que se llama comúnmente "cambiar de chaqueta". Juan de Pipaón, protagonista del anterior episodio, continua narrándonos sus correrías, iniciadas en el anterior relato Memorias de un cortesano de 1815. Leyendo sus ficticios recuerdos somos espectadores de primerísima fila de los tejemanejes con los que se quitaban y ponían consejeros, ministros y cualquier cargo del estado. Por su parte, Salvador Monsalud, también protagonista de esta segunda serie de los episodios de Galdós, ha regresado a España y se presenta a su viejo amigo Pipaón, a quien solicita su mediación para liberar a su anciana madre, que se halla presa y está siendo torturada por la Inquisición en Logroño.
