Due studiosi del secolo scorso, un noto epistemologo, biologo e psicologo (J. Piaget), ed un grande logico, ricco di cultura filosofica ed umanistica (E. W. Beth), a seguito di un’iniziale ed aspra polemica tra loro intercorsa nel 1949 e 1950, decidono successivamente di affrontare insieme un tema insidioso, quale quello del rapporto tra l’epistemologia della matematica e la psicologia genetica. La loro cooperazione produce il presente lavoro, di grande spessore epistemologico, che dopo quasi sessant’anni dalla sua pubblicazione, si rivela ancora di grande attualità. Soprattutto perché getta le basi per un approccio costruttivo ala conoscenza, collocandola in un ambito transculturale, ricco di suggerimenti ed indicazioni innovative, volte al superamento delle vecchie e stantie, vale a dire ideologiche, rigide strutturazioni della conoscenza. Insieme a Logica e conoscenza scientifica e Biologia e conoscenza, entrambi successivi (1967), è il testo che, nell’insieme delle opere piagetiane, assolve più di altri a questo compito. One of the controversial philosophical issues of recent years has been the question of the nature of logical and mathematical entities. Platonist or linguistic modes of explanation have become fashionable, whilst abstrac tionist and constructionist theories have ceased to be so. Beth and Piaget approach this problem in their book from two somewhat different points of view. Beth's approach is largely historico-critical, although he discusses the nature of heuristic thinking in mathematics, whilst that of Piaget is psycho-genetic. The major purpose of this introduction is to summarise some of the main points of their respective arguments. In the first part of this book Beth makes a detailed study of the history of philosophical thinking about mathematics, and draws our attention to the important role played by the Aristotelian methodology of the demon strative sciences. This, he tells us, is characterised by three postulates: (a) deductivity, (b) self-evidence, and (c) reality. The last postulate asserts that the primitive notions of a demonstrative science must have reference to a domain of real entities in order to have significance. On the Aristote lian view discursive reasoning plays a major role in mathematics, whilst pure intuition plays a somewhat subordinate one.

El aprendizaje de la matemática es una necesidad sentida y percibida por las poblaciones indígenas, como se advierte en los testimonios que recogen los autores de esta obra. De lo que se trata, en definitiva, es de responder a las preguntas: ¿es posible que los amerindios se apropien de la matemática e incluso contribuyan a su desarrollo sin renunciar a sus culturas específicas? y ¿es posible ser a la vez matemático y amerindio auténticos sin tener que adoptar, necesariamente, la cultura denominada del “progreso universal”?. Éste es el tema desarrollado en el presente libro, fruto de una iniciativa surgida hace varios años con el fin de efectuar un balance de la situación educativa de los pueblos indígenas, elaborar nuevos enfoques conceptuales y diseñar respuestas pedagógicas adecuadas a sus necesidades y expectativas.
