This hands-on guide supports primary teachers and other school staff in challenging gender stereotypes, and sets out advice on how to implement gender equality and respect in the curriculum, and in all areas of school life. An increase in the number of transgender children - and a recognition of gender reassignment as a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act - means that all primary schools need to ensure they are safe environments respectful of all genders. This book draws on the 'Gender Respect Project', which identified the need to address gender stereotyping and gender-based violence with children and young people. The book is full of lesson plans, case studies, clear guidance and recommended actions as well as further reading and resources. Extending beyond awareness of other genders, this book provides a framework for a gender equality approach in the classroom, and empowers children to think critically about gender and to respect themselves and others.

"This brand new resource provides much needed support for every primary school in the delivery of the objectives outlined in the Equality Act 2010; and in the provision of personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) for every child. This resource provides teachers with a curriculum that promotes equality for all sections of the community. But more than that, the resource aims to bring children and parents on board from the start so that children leave primary school happy and excited about living in a community full of difference and diversity, whether that difference is through ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, age or religion. The resource includes 5 lesson plans for every primary school year group (EYFS- Y6) based upon a selection of 35 picture books. Issues addressed include: gender and gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, disability and age. There is an introductory chapter explaining the legal framework behind the resource, quoting Ofsted and the DfE. A second chapter focuses on creating the whole school ethos through assemblies, school displays and after school clubs. A third chapter focuses on engaging parents. About half the education authorities in Britain have produced equal opportunities statements for their schools' guidance mainly concerned with furthering race and gender equality. A growing number of teachers have therefore been involved in innovation with an equal opportunities basis. The purpose of this book is to develop a critical and practical framework for primary teachers to use when planning and implementing school-based equality policies. The critical element includes rethinking the social dimensions of child-centredness so that it provides a firm ideological basis for equality policy-formation. The innovation model developed here for school use, with the accompanying case-study material, comprises the practical aspect. Innovation can be both rewarding and stressful, because of the demands it makes on teachers at the levels of values and practices. The complexity of equality policy formulation means that teachers' social and political convictions - in particular how they view the role of women and the position of ethnic minority groups - must also figure in the policy-making process. In this book the author puts forward the view that workable policies will be formed when teachers work together as a collaborative staff group, so that each retains some autonomy in implementing school-wide decisions in their own classrooms.

Equality And Freedom In Education written by Brian Holmes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-26 with Education categories.

First published in 1985, Equality and Freedom in Education investigates the extent to which it is possible or desirable to provide equal opportunities in education, regardless of age sex, race, language, and social class. Attempts to make such provision regularly attract the criticism that they remove the freedom of parents and religious bodies to educate children in accordance with their particular wishes. To understand this dilemma, the book analyses the educational systems and practices in England and Wales, France, the USA, the USSR, China and Japan. Information about each system is provided in accordance with a taxonomy, developed by Professor Holmes for the International Bureau of Education in Geneva, and widely accepted by Ministries of Education throughout the world. Simplified diagrams show how school systems are organised and how children pass through the school system, and essential statistical information, taken from UNESCO sources, is also provided. The book will be of interest to students of education and sociology.
