The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the transformative dynamics of Origen's vision of a hermeneutically driven pedagogy. The first part, Ground work, lays the basic conceptual foundation for Origen's conception of Scripture reading by analyzing the classic text, Book 4 of On First Principles, and exploring the role Scripture plays in the Commentary on John, focusing on Origen's discussion ofJohn the Baptist-the last ofthe Old Testament prophets and emblem ofthe Scriptures-and Jesus' meeting with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, whose waters he takes as an image of the Scriptures. The second part, Consorting with Plato, follows the trajectory of embodiment and desire established in Part I by placing elements of Origen's Commentary on the Song of Songs alongside themes from the Platonic corpus in order to analyze Origen's transformative vision of the Scriptural life into to terms of text, image, and the ascent to Beauty. The purpose here is neither to set Origen against Plato nor to fold him into a general theory of the development of Platonism. Rather, we will see how Origen's thought opens up when read within a Platonic milieu, that is, within the range of thought established by the dialogues. The Afterwriting-Postscriptum ventures a few thoughts on how the foregoing reading of Origen opens out onto our current intellectual situation. Textuality is central to our reading, as are the themes of absence and presence, and poetic desire, themes which have come to dominate certain strands of contemporary thought. Throughout the thesis, the passion of Christ is shown to be the key to Origen's approach to reading and transformation.

While it has often been recognised that the development of Christian orthodoxy was stimulated by the speculations of those who are now called heretics, it is still widely assumed that their contribution was merely catalytic, that they called forth the exposition of what the main church already believed but had not yet been required to formulate.This book maintains that scholars have underrated the constructive role of these heretical speculations in the evolution of dogma, showing that salient elements in the doctrines of the fall, the Trinity and the union of God and man in Christ derive from teachings that were initially rejected by the main church. Mark Edwards also reveals how authors who epitomised orthodoxy in their own day sometimes favoured teachings which were later considered heterodox, and that their doctrines underwent radical revision before they became a fixed element of orthodoxy.The first half of the volume discusses the role of Gnostic theologians in the formation of catholic thought; the second half will offer an unfashionable view of the controversies which gave rise to the councils of Nicaea, Ephesus and Chalcedon . Many of the theories advanced here have not been broached elsewhere, and no synthesis on this scale had been attempted by other scholars. While this book proposes a revision in the scholarly perception of early Christendom, it also demonstrates the essential unity of the tradition.

The essays in this volume all ask what it means for human beings to be embodied as desiring creatures—and perhaps still more piercingly, what it means for a philosopher to be embodied. In taking up this challenge via phenomenology, psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, and the philosophy of literature, the volume questions the orthodoxies not only of Western metaphysics but even of the phenomenological tradition itself. We miss much that has philosophical import when we exclude the somatic aspects of human life, and it is therefore the philosopher’s duty now to rediscover the meaning inherent in desire, emotion, and passion—without letting the biases of any tradition determine in advance the meaning that reveals itself in embodied desire. Continental philosophers have already done much to challenge binary oppositions, and this volume sets out a new challenge: we must now also question the dichotomy between being at home and being alienated. Alterity is not simply something out there, separate from myself; rather, it penetrates me through and through, even in my corporeal experience. My body is both my own and other; I am other than myself and therefore other than my body. Additionally, this book is a conversation, not a presentation of a new orthodoxy. Thus, the hope is that these essays will open the way for further dialogue that will continue to radically rethink our understanding of embodied desire. Gathered together here are twelve essays that address these issues from deeply interrelated albeit unique perspectives from within the field.

When seeking to understand Christian love with some precision, we inevitably come to speak about order in loving. The title of this book, Love's Sacred Order, is intended to address the problem of the need for clarification in the matter of love, above all the question of the relationship among the different kinds of love, all of which make their legitimate claim on us. A central concern of these reflections is the fact that we can do as much harm to ourselves by being too restrictive as by being too permissive in what we allow to come under the heading of Christian love. The main intent of these meditations is to explore what the hierarchy might be that God established among all our human loves, on the one hand, and between these and the gratuitously revealed love of God that uncreated mystery, "kept secret for long ages", to which we could not have had access if God himself had not taken the initiative to manifest it in Christ Jesus. The author approaches this subject pondering and responding to issues raised in the widely known work of C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves, of which the year 2000 marks the fortieth anniversary of publication.
