Pantun yang terpilih daripada Koleksi Pantun Melayu Bingkisan Permata (2007) ini dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan puitika sastera melayu yang telah diperkenal oleh Profesor Emeritus Dr. Muhammad Haji Salleh. Dua ciri keindahan pantun yang diambil daripada pendekatan puitika sastera melayu, iaitu dunia yang dipadatkan dan kiasan dan saranan dianalisis melalui simbol tumbuhan dan haiwan yang diungkapkan dalam pantun. Melalui analisis simbol tumbuhan dan haiwan yang diungkapkan dalam pantun, jelas menggambarkan nilai keindahan yang wujud dalam pantun Melayu. Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan oleh penulis mendapati, bahawa puitika sastera Melayu yang diubah untuk menganalisis pantun berdasarkan simbol yang diungkapkan dalam pantun amat sesuai diaplikasikan bagi melihat keindahan pantun. Melalui simbol yang diungkapkan dalam pantun yang mempunyai makna yang tersurat dan tersirat dalam menyampaikan makna pantun itulah yang memberikan nilai keindahan kepada pantun. Harapan dan cadangan penulis agar penerapan dan penggunaan puitika sastera Melayu ini terutamanya prinsip “yang indah-indah: estetika sastera Melayu” diperkembang oleh pengkaji dan pengkritik sastera yang lain dengan mengambil simbol lain seperti warna, anggota badan, alam kosmologi, nama tempat, dan lain-lain.

The sly wit and silky eroticism of the verse genre known as romantic syair were staple dishes on the Southeast Asian cultural menu, especially in the Malay, Islamic regional centres. Yet very few examples are available in translation for the many readers interested in the genre, and attempts by academics to account for their powers of attraction are even rarer. This book is the author s effort to convey the seductive qualities of the sexiest of the romantic syair, the Poem of Bidasari . Few Malay works have been loved and disseminated to the extent the Syair Bidasari has. It was translated in other languages of the region like Makassarese and Maranao and adapted for the Malay theatre and cinema. Three tasks are attempted in the book: a transliteration into Roman characters of one of the surviving Malay manuscripts of the poem, a translation of that manuscript into English, and an inquiry into the poem s virtues. The intertexts drawn upon in the analysis reveal the author s conviction that understanding of traditions of kesenian rakyat (popular arts) such as pantun and the Malay theatre provides the background that allows the text to signify most powerfully.

This book offers a variety of essays and perspectives on some of the foreigners and traders who came to the Malay World and wrote fiction and “faction” (writing that portrays real people or events in a dramatised manner) during their sojourn – regardless of whether they continued to stay in the region, returned to their home country, or migrated to another country. The essays tend to cross generic and disciplinary boundaries as the contributors of this book are drawn from various fields within the arts and humanities, including history, geography, language and literature and translation. All of them, however, deal with colonial texts, the Malay World, or primarily cover the period from the 18th to the 20th century. Including readings of fiction, diaries, vignettes, letters written by traders or colonial officers, the uniqueness of this book lies in the personal, private and/or informal nature of the various documents studied. This book is the proceeding of the International Conference on Maritime Education (ICOME 2021) that was successfully held on 3-5 November 2021 using an online platform.
