Phenomenologists or Continental thinkers argue for the subject-object continuum. For phenomenology, subjectivity is of the object, and object is for the subject. This book applies that continuum to the holistic foundations of work or specialization. The author devotes a chapter to each of eight cultural applications of the subject-object continuum. Chapter One examines the specialist-generalist continuum meaning specialization for general education. That continuum comprises the framework for the remaining seven chapters. Those seven include production for community, design for user, automation for user, computing for society, taxation for society, information for manufacturing, and procedure for goal. These eight applications constitute the basis for a core curriculum. The core curriculum gives holistic meaning, order, or cosmos to all jobs and to all people. Cosmos is a Greek word meaning humanistic-scientific order, irreducible to physics. The core curriculum is fundamental cosmology. Each of the eight continuities follow in a logical, systematic manner from the analytic-subjective continuum meaning object for subjectivity. Phenomenology of education can become the human basis of a promising holistic logic, bringing together analytic and existential themes.

Nella civiltà occidentale la rilevanza educativa del religioso ha rivestito per secoli un significativo interesse, sia nell’ambito del pensiero filosofico sia in quello della teologia. Dall’Illuminismo in poi si sono moltiplicati a tal punto i sospetti nutriti verso il rapporto tra fede cristiana e modelli educativi che la tradizione culturale formatasi a tal riguardo è diventata l’oggetto di un’incessante polemica. L’obiettiva problematicità con cui si pone oggi qualsiasi discorso sul sacro, secondo un’opinione diffusa, è legata agli stessi presupposti del pensiero moderno che mettono in dubbio la possibilità di articolare l’anelito religioso con la funzione critica della ragione. Nella riflessione contemporanea, inoltre, al venire meno del consenso sulla ragionevolezza della fede si è aggiunta una serpeggiante sfiducia riguardo alla legittimità dell’esercizio della ragione. La crisi attraversata da una certa nozione di razionalità, la cui pretesa assolutezza non è estranea al carattere onnicomprensivo e totalizzante assunto dal sapere scientifico, favorisce un indubbio e per alcuni versi ambiguo interesse per il sacro nel complesso delle forme simboliche iscritte nel vivere sociale. […] Di là dai preconcetti ideologici e dall’intolleranza fideistica, la ricerca si propone perciò di indagare le condizioni di possibilità di un’ermeneutica pedagogica che comprende tanto la consapevolezza storico-critica quanto l’intenzionalità dell’appartenenza e della convinzione. Il volume persegue un duplice compito: contribuire alla ridefinizione dello statuto epistemologico della pedagogia, ponendo in luce la specificità della dimensione religiosa in ordine al discorso dell’educazione; articolare una prospettiva di ricerca aperta ai significati educativi in vario modo suscitati dall’esperienza del sacro, dalla coscienza credente allo smarrimento della certezza della fede, dall’agnosticismo alla negazione di qualsiasi riferimento trascendente. Lo studio cerca di mostrare il carattere dinamico ed universale dei fenomeni religiosi che interrogano il sapere pedagogico e richiedono di essere adeguatamente storicizzati, al pari di tutte quelle manifestazioni della vita che contrassegnano la civiltà umana. Le radici cristiane dell’Europa, e la forte presenza del cattolicesimo nel nostro Paese, costituiscono l’orizzonte religioso a cui il volume s’ispira. Questa opzione non implica né disconoscimento per i fenomeni riconducibili ad altre tradizioni di fede né disinteresse verso nuovi movimenti religiosi, dei quali la ricerca per altro considera alcune peculiarità. Il Cristianesimo e i suoi influssi sul riconoscimento dei diritti inalienabili della persona, sulla formazione delle istituzioni giuridico-politiche, sul complessivo sviluppo delle tradizioni culturali dell’Occidente non possono essere rappresentati in modo pregiudiziale come epifenomeni sovrastrutturali e fattori d’alienazione.
