The notions of other peoples, cultures, and natural conditions have always been determined by the epistemology of imagination and fantasy, providing much freedom and creativity, and yet have also created much fear, anxiety, and horror. In this regard, the pre-modern world demonstrates striking parallels with our own insofar as the projections of alterity might be different by degrees, but they are fundamentally the same by content. Dreams, illusions, projections, concepts, hopes, utopias/dystopias, desires, and emotional attachments are as specific and impactful as the physical environment. This volume thus sheds important light on the various lenses used by people in the Middle Ages and the early modern age as to how they came to terms with their perceptions, images, and notions. Previous scholarship focused heavily on the history of mentality and history of emotions, whereas here the history of pre-modern imagination, and fantasy assumes center position. Imaginary things are taken seriously because medieval and early modern writers and artists clearly reveal their great significance in their works and their daily lives. This approach facilitates a new deep-structure analysis of pre-modern culture.

Esta Tese tem como foco as apropriações que os imigrantes brasileiros em Portugal fazem do Orkut, site de rede social que, no espaço da internet, teve a peculiaridade de mobilizar amplamente, e de modo especial, os brasileiros. O autor realiza um extensivo e rigoroso trabalho etnográfico em que, através da observação participante e análise das interações da comunidade intitulada “Brasileiros em Portugal”, nos oferece algumas chaves analíticas para compreender as estratégias utilizadas pelos imigrantes brasileiros – comunidade com maior presença em Portugal - para a manutenção e recriação de vínculos com o país de origem e com o novo contexto de imigração. A investigação evidencia, ainda, as relações entre os usos da tecnologia e os processos de cidadania das migrações transnacionais, enfatizando suas dimensões subjetivas, éticas e estéticas. O trabalho estabelece igualmente uma oportuna reflexão sobre o papel das redes sociais da internet no processo de construção do imaginário social de indivíduos marcados pelo deslocamento territorial e pela experiência da multiterritorialidade, aportando elementos específicos para a problematização dos conceitos de comunidade, identidades e sociabilidades associados à vivência do transnacionalismo em espaços da internet. As reflexões propostas sugerem que as apropriações e usos específicos que fazem os imigrantes brasileiros da rede social Orkut possibilitam a experimentação de novas formas de sociabilidade e a produção de imaginários sociais sobre ser imigrante, assim como evidenciam as dificuldades e estratégias de enfrentamento e construção de trajetórias particulares de mobilidade que reatualizam a histórica relação migratória entre Brasil e Portugal. Do âmbito dos estudos comunicacionais, esta pesquisa contribui para o debate sobre o aprofundamento da presença e mediação das tecnologias da comunicação na constituição das experiências migratórias transnacionais, ao mesmo tempo em que instiga as instituições responsáveis pelas políticas migratórias e a sociedade, de modo mais geral, a buscar nas marcas deixadas pelas narrativas dos brasileiros na internet referências sobre os anseios e demandas individuais e coletivas que demarcam suas trajetórias de migração.

Bringing together an expert group of established and emerging scholars, this book analyses the pervasive myth of the 'new man' in various fascist movements and far-right regimes between 1919 and 1945. Through a series of ground-breaking case studies focusing on countries in Europe, but with additional chapters on Argentina, Brazil and Japan, The "New Man" in Radical Right Ideology and Practice, 1919-45 argues that what many national forms of far-right politics understood at the time as a so-called 'anthropological revolution' is essential to understanding this ideology's bio-political, often revolutionary dynamics. It explores how these movements promoted the creation of a new, ideal human, what this ideal looked like and what this things tell us about fascism's emergence in the 20th century. The years after World War One saw the rise of regimes and movements professing totalitarian aims. In the case of revolutionary, radical-right movements, these totalising goals extended to changing the very nature of humanity through modern science, propaganda and conquest. At its most extreme, one of the key aims of fascism – the most extreme manifestation of radical right politics between the wars – was to create a 'new man'. Naturally, this manifested itself in different ways in varying national contexts and this volume explores these manifestations in order to better comprehend early 20th-century fascism both within national boundaries and in a broader, transnational context.
