En este libro, los autores examinan, desde diferentes aspectos teóricos y metodológicos, algunos temas de investigación social, histórica y cultural sobre el Estado de México. Por su carácter multidisciplinar, esta obra se conforma por tres partes, la primera es nombrada "La perspectiva arqueológica" y está integrada por tres capítulos sobre la arqueología del Estado de México, uno es una investigación a partir de materiales arqueológicos del Valle de Toluca, y los otros dos versan sobre importantes contribuciones al desarrollo de la arqueología en el Estado de México. La segunda parte del volumen, con "El enfoque etnohistórico", se compone de cuatro capítulos: tres sobre la historia prehispánica y uno sobre la historia indígena colonial. Si bien se refieren a aspectos sociopolíticos y religiosos, tienen en común sustentarse en los aportes de la arqueología, pero en mayor medida en fuentes escritas y códices del periodo colonial. La tercera parte, sobre "Perspectivas históricas y antropológicas", aborda trabajos con propuestas explicativas de aspectos devocionales y políticas del periodo colonial; la participación de individuos y comunidades en las pugnas políticas y luchas armadas a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX; aspectos sobre la rebelión cristera en el Estado de México y, finalmente, un acercamiento al pensamiento holístico en una localidad de Texcoco. Estos trabajos se apoyaron en fuentes como la documentación de archivo, bibliografía, hemerografía antigua, fotografías y testimonios etnográficos.
