Nuestra época se ha saturado de discursos sobre la memoria: libros, coloquios, museos, leyes, son algunos de los modos en que la memoria ocupa el espacio público, poniendo de manifiesto la intensa voluntad "memorística" de la sociedad actual. La saturación, no obstante, produce más confusión que claridad, genera más ruido que sentido y trivializa aquello de lo que se ocupa. De allí la radical importancia de esta obra de Manuel Cruz. 'Cómo hacer cosas con recuerdos' establece una distinción entre los usos reivindicativos, la vocación puramente archivística y la manipulación política, por un lado, y las potencias que la memoria tiene para producir futuro, por el otro. En efecto, para Cruz la memoria no es el inventario exánime de hechos acaecidos, ni tampoco la interpretación de esos hechos que permite fundar una toma de partido. Es, antes bien, un instrumento que hace posible una mirada distinta sobre la realidad, para "contemplarla, aunque sólo fuera por un segundo, bajo una luz diferente. Porque humano, insobornablemente humano -dice el autor-, es el impulso que nos lleva a confrontarnos con nuestro pasado, a medirnos con él, a intentar extraer del relato de lo ocurrido lecciones que nos ayuden a proseguir nuestra andadura liberados, en lo posible, de lo peor de nosotros mismos. Ilusionados, en la medida en que nos dejen, en vivir juntos de otra manera".

Esta antología está dirigida a los estudiosos, tanto filósofos como matemáticos, interesados en conocer la polémica sobre los fundamentos del cálculo, desencadenada por la publicación de El analista, donde Berkeley señaló oscuridades en los planteamientos de Newton y de Leibniz. A ella replicaron dos defensores de la posición de Newton, airados porque alguien que no era considerado matemático se atreviese a criticar al eximio autor inglés: James Jurin, un médico reconocido y profesor de matemáticas de la Universidad de Cambridge —que usó como seudónimo en sus escritos el de Philalethes Cantabrigiensis—, y Jacob Walton, profesor irlandés de matemáticas, quien se contentó con seguir las críticas de Jurin en contra de Berkeley. En este volumen se incluyen estos textos y las respuestas de Berkeley, y se añaden dos escritos más a los que Berkeley ya no respondió: uno de John Hanna, quien más bien critica a Walton, y otro del conocido matemático Thomas Bayes, quien formula una crítica a la obra de Berkeley sin el carácter abusivo que muestra la de Jurin.
