Poet and painter Cathleen Cohen artfully paints a compelling sequence of scenes and portraits encompassing joy, freedom, violence, trauma, and the challenge of facing mortality: one's own as well as that of lost or faltering beloveds. In Cohen's skillful hands, poems become an occasion for questioning - "How long will we last / as witness, as echo?" - and for cherishing what the speaker tries to "... hold then release / into brushstrokes." Cohen vividly depicts a search for healing and wholeness, promising, "If air shatters / into fault lines and shards / I will reach / to collect what flies out / and give voice." Cohen's book deftly weaves a multifaceted tapestry of lived experiences through poems that will break your heart and stir your soul. - Dilruba Ahmed, author of Bring Now the Angel Cathleen Cohen writes of "trying to paint this landscape / without myself in it," distilling a familiar ideal of aesthetic objectivity, of abstraction released from realistic depiction. Yet even as she imagines "the line / sketching itself," Cohen is sharply aware of a deeper ineradicable subjectivity, a "jitter," a "twitch," "glints and shards / I can't obscure." In poems that anatomize abuse as "a knot I can't / unknot," Cohen demonstrates how art transforms the devastating into the crucial. Thus "can't unknot" becomes "can't obscure." Thus "my stiffening tongue" loosens to speak eloquently. "I love distortions," Cohen writes - and how essential to our human understanding are the supposed "distortions" of subjective art. - Nathalie F. Anderson, author of Stain Cathleen Cohen picked up a pen. The point ? To tell the truth. She picked up a brush. Two different arts. Two different methods of working, but what looks simple is more complex than you might think. As a matter of fact, don't think. Feel and know. Some people will avoid the truth by calling it Art. By saying it's beautiful. They won't be wrong but they could go for more. Cohen just says it as it is in words and in watercolors. Don't miss her! Don't miss this book. - Fran Quinn --- Painters create using the syntax of tone, line, mass and space. Layering is a key element, particularly in watercolors. Images may retreat or surface through layers of paint. Compositions may be clearly mapped or obscured. Such dynamics animate the work of Cathleen Cohen, painter and writer. Cohen was the 2019 Poet Laureate of Montgomery County, PA. She created the We the Poets project of ArtWell, an arts education nonprofit that has served thousands of children. She received the Interfaith Relations Award from the Montgomery County PA Human Rights Commission and the Public Service Award from National Association of Poetry Therapy. In Etching the Ghost, Cohen presents painting as a lens and an instrument, a way to view life and make meaning. This collection explores the images that accompany one painter while she makes art, teaches and raises family. Violence also speaks through these poems. But painting (like poetry) is also a vessel which can hold trauma as it is absorbed and transformed.

In 1652, on a backstreet in Old Amsterdam, a paper mill is working into the night as Rembrandt van Rijn, a regular customer of this establishment, makes one of his orders for fine etching paper. The 7-year old son of the owner, Arent de Gelder, goes with his father to deliver the finished paper. A casual gesture by the famous Rembrandt-a gift of an etching to the boy-changes the youngster's life. Another life-changing experience begins on October 31, 2012, when William "Mac" Handyside MacRitchie collapses in his printmaking studio. Mac comes to in a few minutes-but he is a little disoriented. There must have been some magic in the old copper etching plate he had been cleaning with lacquer thinner because, in the time of just those few minutes that he was passed out, he takes a week-long, trouble-filled quest to Rembrandt's time and place: 1660, Amsterdam. Mac's time-travel journey starts out badly as he discovers himself stowed-away on a putrid dung boat along with his Mini Halfwood etching press and printmaking chest. He embarks on a deadly liaison with a wicked procuress, poses as a scholar from the American colonies, and seeks to meet Rembrandt van Rijn. The famed artist, Rembrandt, desperate for money, believes Mac can help him make a comeback as a printmaker and so he covets Mac's Halfwood press. Mac will encounter Arent de Gelder, along the way. The rest is history!

Etching can seem mysterious and inaccessible, but this practical book guides you through the process to reveal the potential of this distinctive means of creating artists' prints. With clear instructions and visual guides, it explains the many ways that marks are first made on a metal plate before ink is applied and the image transferred onto a sheet of paper. The book goes on to introduce a broad menu of techniques, allowing the visual artist to develop a uniquely personal approach. Explanations are given for photo-etching, aquatint, as well as related intaglio processes such as drypoint and photopolymer. This new book encourages artists to experiment and try combining techniques to explore their potential, and includes interviews with leading artists explaining their approaches.

Ascending Chaos is the first major retrospective of Japanese-American artist Masami Teraoka's prolific and acclaimed work thus far. In Teraoka's paintings—which have evolved from his wry mimicry of Japanese woodblock prints to much larger and complex canvasses reminiscent of Bosch and Brueghel—the political and the personal collide in a riot of sexually frank tableaux. Populated by geishas and goddesses, priests, and politicians, and prominent contemporary figures, these paintings are the spectacular next phase of a wildly inventive career. With essays by renowned art critics who discuss how Teraoka's work inventively marries east and west, sex and religion, Ascending Chaos is a critical overview of this cultural trickster.

This monograph is a collection of invited contributions from a group of investiga tors who share a common interest in the interrelationships between the shape, struc ture, and functional characteristics of normal and pathologic erythrocytes. Most of the authors participated in a workshop on red cell shape held in June, 1972 at the Institute of Cell Pathology, Hopital de Bicetre, Paris. We hope that these various contributions on the physiology, pathology, and ultrastructure of red cell shape will be useful and stimulating for other investigators interested in the correlation of shape and structure with the biochemistry and biophysics of the red cell. The text is divided into four sections. Section I deals with red cell shape, including the presentation of a rational descriptive nomenclature and a discussion of post splenectomy changes. Section II deals with biochemical factors that underlie the disco cyte-echinocyte (crenated) and discocyte-stomatocyte (cup-shaped) transformation. This section includes discussions of plasma factors, and of the biochemical dynamics of erythrocyte lipids and consideration of the effects of such factors as cellular ATP, calcium, aging, and various chemical agents as determinants of shape. Section III, which deals with biophysical measurements, includes studies of the deformability of cells of different shapes, descriptions of ways to define precisely the geometric dimensions of the red cell under various circumstances, and a model of membrane structure, which is proposed to account for the dimensions of red cells that undergo shape change.
