Wieso sind die Menschen nicht fähig, ihr Kaufverhalten zugunsten der Arbeiter in Ausbeutungsbetrieben zu ändern? Grundlage für die Untersuchung bildet Adam Smiths Theorie der ethischen Gefühle "Theory of Moral Sentiments". Abgesehen davon, dass Smiths TMS neben seinem anderen Werk, dem „Wohlstand der Nationen“, in der akademischen Welt leicht in Vergessenheit geraten ist, hat sich die Wissenschaft in Bezug auf die TMS in den letzten Jahren kaum mit den Veränderungen, die die Globalisierung mit sich bringt, beschäftigt. Inzwischen untersuchen zwar auch einige wenige Autoren, wie beispielsweise Lisa Herzog, wie man Smiths TMS auf die heutige globalisierte Welt anwenden kann, Ansätze dazu, wie das individuelle Kaufverhalten durch die moralische Selbstbeurteilung beeinflusst wird, gibt es bisher, meines Wissens nach, jedoch noch nicht. Dabei bietet sich die TMS geradezu an, unser Kaufverhalten zu analysieren: Sie besagt, dass Menschen Sympathie mit ihren Mitmenschen empfinden und deshalb ihr Verhalten an sie anpassen (Smith 1985: 1f.). Sie wollen, dass ihre Mitmenschen ein gutes Bild von ihnen haben und verhalten sich dementsprechend (ebd.: 70). Dies gelingt ihnen durch die Rolle des „unparteiischen Beobachters“ (impartial spectator), welcher in der TMS die Grundlage für die moralische Beurteilung des eigenen Verhaltens abgibt (ebd.: 170). Zwar äußert Smith in der TMS auch, dass Menschen gegenüber Zeitgenossen, mit denen sie in keinerlei Kontakt stehen, Gleichgültigkeit hegen (ebd.: 205), - er sieht dies sogar als weise Fügung der Natur, da sie das Leben dieser Menschen durch ihr Verhalten sowieso nicht beeinflussen könnten (ebd.: 207) - doch durch die Globalisierung und ihren Konsum steht die westliche Bevölkerung inzwischen auch, anders als zu Zeiten Smiths, beispielsweise mit den Näherinnen einer Fabrik in Bangladesch indirekt in Verbindung. Regelmäßig berichten die Medien über deren Arbeitsumstände. Deshalb müsste es die Menschen in den Industriestaaten doch eigentlich kümmern, was diese Menschen von ihnen denken und ihr Verhalten ändern. Deshalb halte ich eine Beschäftigung mit der TMS mit Blick auf das Thema des bewussten Konsums im Zuge der Globalisierung für sinnvoll.

Jahrhunderts, Note: 2,7, Universität Mannheim, Veranstaltung: Adam Smith: A theory of moral sentiments, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In erster Linie ist Adam Smith durch sein ökonomisches Werk bekannt, aber auch als Moralphilosoph trägt er mit „Theorie der ethischen Gefühle“ (1759) zu einer philosophischen Disziplin bei. Die Sympathie ist das „konzeptuelle Rückgrat“ seiner Moralphilosophie und macht damit den Kern von Smiths moralphilosophischer Konzeption aus. Deswegen untersucht diese Arbeit die Sympathie genauer und stellt dar, dass sie mehr als ein Gefühl ist. Zuordnen lässt sich Smith philosophiehistorisch der Strömung des Moral Sentimentalism, welche unseren Gefühlen und Neigungen eine wichtige Rolle in moralischen Fragen zuschreibt. Die Art und Weise wie Smith deskriptiv das Wirken der Sympathie in unserem Alltag beschreibt erinnert an ein Gefühl. Da die Sympathie durch Gewohnheit und Erziehung zu der Grundlage unseres sozialen Lebens und auch der Reflektion der eigenen Person geworden ist, handeln wir in gewisser Weise automatisch und intuitiv in ihrem Sinne. Die zahlreichen Beispiele, die Smith anführt, unterstützen diesen Eindruck. Im Folgenden wird die Sympathie in ihre einzelnen Komponenten zergliedert um zu untersuchen, ob die Sympathie als ein Gefühl zu verstehen ist. Diese Arbeit fokussiert sich darauf die Sympathie als einen mehrschichtigen Prozess zu interpretieren, der durch Einbildungskraft und Rationalität eine eigene Qualität entfaltet. Smiths Begriff der Sympathie soll von zwei Perspektiven ausgehend und dadurch jeweils innerhalb eines klaren Bezugsrahmens erläutert werden. Einerseits kann deswegen die Fragestellung aus zwei Perspektiven untersucht werden und andererseits wird die Argumentation dadurch in klare Schritte eingeteilt. Aus der individualistischen Ich-Perspektive wird zuerst der Prozess beschrieben, wie sich nach Smith Menschen unter Einfluss der Sympathie verhalten. Danach wird die Bedeutung der Einbildungskraft und der Rationalität in diesem Ablauf untersucht. Als nächstes wird Sympathie von Empathie und Egoismus abgegrenzt, die als Beispiele von Interpretationen, die auf der Ebene von Gefühlen argumentieren, angeführt werden. In dem zweiten Teil der gesellschaftlichen Perspektive wird der Übergang zu dem unparteiischen Beobachter dargestellt. Abschließend soll zusammengefasst werden, was die Sympathie gegenüber Gefühlen abgrenzt um dadurch ihre Qualitäten hervorzuheben.

D. D. Raphael provides a critical account of the moral philosophy of Adam Smith, presented in his first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Whilst it does not have the same prominence in its field as his work on economics, The Wealth of Nations, Smith's writing on ethics is of continuing importance and interest today, especially for its theory of conscience. Smith sees the origin of conscience in the sympathetic and antipathetic feelings of spectators. As spectators of the actions of other people, we can imagine how we would feel in their situation. If we would share their motives, we approve of their action. If not, we disapprove. When we ourselves take an action, we know from experience what spectators would feel, approval or disapproval. That knowledge forms conscience, an imagined impartial spectator who tells us whether an action is right or wrong. In describing the content of moral judgement, Smith is much influenced by Stoic ethics, with an emphasis on self-command, but he voices criticism as well as praise. His own position is a combination of Stoic and Christian values. There is a substantial difference between the first five editions of the Moral Sentiments and the sixth. Failure to take account of this has led some commentators to mistaken views about the supposed youthful idealism of the Moral Sentiments as contrasted with the mature realism of The Wealth of Nations. A further source of error has been the supposition that Smith treats sympathy as the motive of moral action, as contrasted with the supposedly universal motive of self-interest in The Wealth of Nations.
