Con frecuencia se dice que en la escuela se evalúa mucho. En contra de esta afirmación, conviene aclarar que en ella realmente se examina mucho, pero se evalúa muy poco. La razón de tal premisa es que de la evaluación siempre aprendemos, evaluamos porque queremos conocer; sin embargo con el examen, normalmente confirmamos saberes o ignorancias, pero profesores y alumnos aprendemos poco. Ejercida como actividad al servicio del conocimiento, la evaluación está llamada a desempeñar una función formativa importante en los procesos de aprendizaje. Pero si se limita al examen, aquel ejercicio de aprendizaje se transforma en un instrumento de distribución, que en muchos casos acaba en exclusión. La preocupación por la acción éticamente comprometida de la evaluación, más que por el afán por la objetividad, será la garantía de que actuará siempre al servicio de quienes aprenden: del profesor para seguir mejorando en su quehacer docente; del alumno en su necesidad de asegurar el aprendizaje que le abre las puertas para la inclusión y la participación en los bienes culturales y científicos. Debemos descartar la idea de que la escuela es un órgano social de control, y trabajar convencidos de que su tarea se debe centrar en la promoción del conocimiento y de las personas que en ella conviven.
