High-speed isolated signalized intersections (HSISI's) are generally encountered after long uninterrupted and uncongested flow conditions, thereby catching some motorists by surprise. For this reason alone, approaches to HSISI's need to have safe and effective warning, control, and intersection geometric treatments. This research identified characteristics at California HSISI's that relate to accident rates. A data base consisting of approximately 100 intersection and approach variables was established and used to investigate advance warning, signal timing and phasing, channelization, signal equipment configurations, shoulder widths and types, median widths and types, and approach speeds.

Advancement in design and construction to embrace the impact of rapid global urbanization growth in infrastructure development is inevitable. This proceedings volume includes many smart and green solutions for civil infrastructures, incorporating geotechnical and engineering geology aspects. The articles presented in this volume are attempts made by the researchers and practitioners to address many geotechnical challenges, based on the state-of-the-art practices, innovative technologies, new research results and case histories in construction and design towards safer and cost effective infrastructures. This volume covers a wide range of topics with direct relevance to people within the broad field of geomechanics, including consultants, contractors, academics, materials suppliers and the owners and operators of civil infrastructures. Many papers associated with numerical modeling of transport infrastructure, advanced soil and rock testing, field monitoring, tunnelling, expansive soils, geo-center motion, triaxial and dynamic testing, piles etc. are included. The content is based on the contributions to the 6th GeoChina International Conference on Civil & Transportation Infrastructures: From Engineering to Smart & Green Life Cycle Solutions -- Nanchang, China, 2021.

Development And Evaluation Of An Active Warning Device For School Bus Loading And Unloading Points In Areas Of Limited Visibility written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with School buses categories.

The primary objectives of this research project were: (1) to develop an active advance warning device (AAWD) comprised of an actuated flashing beacon supplement to a conventional SCHOOL BUS STOP AHEAD sign (S3-1) and (2) to evaluate its effect on driver performance and safety through school bus loading and unloading zones. Secondary objectives were to summarize system components and costs, develop an activation strategy, review the liability risk, review national experience related to safety, and provide guidance regarding specifications and use in Texas. With respect to safety, 37 of 46 studies reported a positive effect resulting from AAWDs. Findings from field studies conducted in Texas also suggest favorable results with confirmed reductions in vehicle approach speeds when the flashing beacon was activated. Costs for the final AAWD are estimated to be 2,000 dollars for the S3-1 sign and flashing beacons and 2,600 dollars for the flashing beacon activation system, not including sign installation or ongoing maintenance and operations costs. A review of published literature and historic case law suggests minimal additional liability risk above what is already experienced by transportation departments. Unique areas of risk relate to "jurisdictional responsibility" for establishing, operating, and maintaining school bus loading and unloading zones and the hazard expectation tied to the flashing beacon activation (i.e., motorists may not exercise the same degree of caution when the bus is not present and the beacons are not flashing despite children being present at the bus stop). Given the favorable safety impacts, the low system cost, and the minimal additional liability risk incurred, the AA WD is recommended for further implementation.

Impacts On Safety Of Left Turn Treatment At High Speed Signalized Intersections written by T. H. Maze and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Left-turn lanes categories.

Left-turning traffic is a major source of conflicts at intersections. Though an average of only 10% to 15% of all approach traffic turns left, these vehicles are involved in approximately 45% of all accidents. This report presents the results of research conducted to develop models which estimate approach accident rates at high speed signalized intersections. The objective of the research was to quantify the relationship between traffic and intersection characteristics, and accident potential of different left turn treatments. Geometric, turning movement counts, and traffic signal phasing data were collected at 100 intersections in Iowa using a questionnaire sent to municipalities. Not all questionnaires resulted in complete data and ultimately complete data were derived for 63 intersections providing a database of 248 approaches. Accident data for the same approaches were obtained from the Iowa Department of Transportation Accident Location and Analysis System (ALAS). Regression models were developed for two different dependent variables: 1) the ratio of the number of left turn accidents per approach to million left turning vehicles per approach, and 2) the ratio of accidents per approach to million traffic movements per approach. A number of regression models were developed for both dependent variables. One model using each dependent variable was developed for intersections with low, medium, and high left turning traffic volumes. As expected, the research indicates that protected left turn phasing has a lower accident potential than protected/permitted or permitted phasing. Left turn lanes and multiple lane approaches are beneficial for reducing accident rates, while raised medians increase the likelihood of accidents. Signals that are part of a signal system tend to have lower accident rates than isolated signals. The resulting regression models may be used to determine the likely impact of various left turn treatments on intersection accident rates. When designing an intersection approach, a traffic engineer may use the models to estimate the accident rate reduction as a result of improved lane configurations and left turn treatments. The safety benefits may then be compared to any costs associated with operational effects to the intersection (i.e., increased delay) to determine the benefits and costs of making intersection safety improvements.
