Evolution Of Neurotrophic Factors written by Christopher S. von Bartheld and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with categories.

This special issue reviews current knowledge about the evolution of several key neurotrophic factors, including the neurotrophins and the GDNF family, as well as EGF receptor ligands. Leading researchers from six countries provide concise updates on the origin and evolution of neurotrophic factors and their receptors. The authors trace major developments in the structure and function of neurotrophic factors during the course of 800 million years of evolution, from prechordates to mammals. This collection of papers presents the first systematic and comprehensive survey of the origins and diversification of neurotrophic factors and their essential roles not only in ontogeny but also in phylogeny of the brain and behavior in both invertebrates and vertebrates. The contributions help achieve a true understanding of neurotrophic factors and their roles in brain evolution. This issue is a valuable source of information for developmental biologists, comparative and evolutionary biologists, molecular biologists, geneticists, and researchers interested in signaling systems, trophic factor biology, neuropharmacology, brain plasticity, and brain repair.

Neurotrophic Factors written by Stephen D Skaper and has been published by Humana Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-25 with Medical categories.

Nervous system development evolves from the well-orchestrated processes of neural induction, cell proliferation, differentiation, cell migration, survival, and synapse formation. Among these environmental cues, neurotrophic factors are secreted proteins that promote neurite outgrowth, neuronal cell differentiation and survival both in vivo and in vitro. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is the founding and best characterized member of the neurotrophin family of neurotrophic polypeptides. Neurotrophic Factors: Methods and Protocols presents a selection of protocols and procedures which make use of cellular, tissue, and whole animal models which can be applied to the investigation of neurotrophic factors and other agents impacting on these systems. Chapters cover a wide-range of topics such as dealing with the culture of neurons and glia from the central and peripheral nervous systems, neuron-glia co-culture models, and cell-based assays for the evaluation of neuroprotective molecules, as well as assays which can be applied to the study of agents with neuroregenerative potential. Protocols describing viral- and nanoparticle-based delivery methods to neural cells are also presented, following by chapters dealing with organotypic slice culture protocols. Lastly, several chapters are dedicated to in vivo lesion models of relevance to nervous system pathology, which can be applied to the investigation of neurotrophic factors and peptides. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, Neurotrophic Factors: Methods and Protocols seeks to serve both professionals and novices alike with its well-honed methodologies in an effort to further our knowledge of what has been described as the last frontier of science.

Neurotrophins And The Neural Crest written by Maya Sieber-Blum and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-06-29 with Science categories.

The target of much current research, the neural crest is a transitory tissue of the vertebrate embryo that gives rise to many diverse structures in the adult organism, including the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system, and most primary sensory ganglia, among other cell types and tissues. Reflecting recent investigations, Neurotrophins and the Neural Crest is dedicated to the roles neurotrophins play in neural crest cell differentiation and in the survival of neural crest derivatives. This timely book correlates in vitro data with results obtained from knock-out mice with targeted neurotrophin or receptor deletions, with the goal of determining the fidelity and usefulness of various experimental culture systems. It also covers embryonic expression patterns and functions of neurotrophins and their receptors. Chapters are organized to begin with neural crest-derived tissues as sources for experimental material, including sensory neurons, sympathetic neurons, enteric neurons, melanocytes, and calcitonin-producing cells from the thyroid, and concludes with discussions of the neural crest cells. A broad range of researchers and scientists involved in growth factors, neuroscience, developmental and cell biology, embryology, and many other fields, will find that Neurotrophins and the Neural Crest targets this fast-moving area of research completely and concisely.

This volume provides an up-to-date survey of current thinking concerning the actions of chemical factors in the regulation of neuronal behaviour under normal and pathological conditions. The book is divided into four sections, dealing with chemical factors involved with the formation of axon pathways, factors involved with neuronal survival and specialization during normal development, factors involved in normal maintenance and repair of adult neurons and, finally, factors that have been implicated as mediators of degenerative changes in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The recent identification of susceptibility genes for schizophrenia, depression and learning and memory dysfunction suggest that psychiatric disorders may be influenced by a small number of genes with multiple actions. This is the first book to investigate the role of growth factors in these disorders, which should provide clues to the underlying biochemical mechanisms. For example, recent studies have substantiated the provocative finding that neuregulin 1 (NRG1)is a candidate gene for schizophrenia. Neuregulin and its receptors, the ErbB tyrosine kinases, are essential for development of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Lack of NRG1 function may be involved in dysregulation of synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity in the adult mediated through glutamate receptor function. Polymorphisms for BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. BDNF is a prevalent neurotrophic factor that plays an important role in the pathophysiology of depression, bipolar disease and other psychiatric disorders. Other topics addressed in this book include neuroplasticity and neurotrophic factors, signal transduction by neurotrophins, intracellular trafficking of growth factors, trophic factors and cognitive functions, neurotrophins and depression, and pharmacological treatments of schizophrenia.

Neuronal Growth Factors written by Mark Bothwell and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-21 with Medical categories.

A host of environmental factors regulate the embryonic development of neurons. In adults, the survival of neurons, the regeneration of damaged axons, and plastic changes in axonal arborization are also controlled by a complex array of environmental cues. An important category of regulatory influences involves target-derived hormone-like peptides act ing on neuronal cell surface receptors. Nerve growth factor (NGF) was the first such factor to be characterized (LEVI MONTALCINI and HAMBURGER 1953) and has served as the model against which all similar factors are compared. A number of factors with properties similar to NGF have been described with activities toward differing populations of neurons. Many of these factors have been characterized only poorly at the biochemical level. However, several factors have been charac terized to the extent that molecular clones are available and complete amino acid sequences are known. These include: three structurally related factors, NGF itself (SCOTT et al. 1983), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) (LEIBROCK et al. 1989), and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) (MAISONPIERRE et al. 1990; HOHN et al. 1990); ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) (LIN et al. 1989) and a second set of structural homologs; acidic and basic fibroblast growth factors (aFGF, bFGF) (ABRAHAM et al. 1986; JAYE et al. 1986). Investigators have cloned the receptors for NGF (JOHNSON et al. 1986; RADEKE et al. 1987) and FGF (LEE et al. 1989).
