In How Math Explains the World, mathematician Stein reveals how seemingly arcane mathematical investigations and discoveries have led to bigger, more world-shaking insights into the nature of our world. In the four main sections of the book, Stein tells the stories of the mathematical thinkers who discerned some of the most fundamental aspects of our universe. From their successes and failures, delusions, and even duels, the trajectories of their innovations—and their impact on society—are traced in this fascinating narrative. Quantum mechanics, space-time, chaos theory and the workings of complex systems, and the impossibility of a "perfect" democracy are all here. Stein's book is both mind-bending and practical, as he explains the best way for a salesman to plan a trip, examines why any thought you could have is imbedded in the number π , and—perhaps most importantly—answers one of the modern world's toughest questions: why the garage can never get your car repaired on time. Friendly, entertaining, and fun, How Math Explains the World is the first book by one of California's most popular math teachers, a veteran of both "math for poets" and Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies. And it's perfect for any reader wanting to know how math makes both science and the world tick.

Space, time, matter - what really is all that? What are charges, what flavours? What is preventing time from running backwards? Quantum Gravity is describing all that - consisely, comprehensively, to the point. The Grand Unified Theory (GUT = ToE = "Theory of Everything"), finally, is caring for the rest by relating all forces of nature to each other. Parities are the peep-holes into strange worlds before the Big Bang and beyond the event horizon. Everything is calculable, even the transitions there. By working out the value of the fine-structure constant, theory opens to recognizing Dark Matter as the cradle of visible matter; the GUT is demonstrating birth and properties of ordinary matter out of Dark Matter and by what its creation process is stopped again. A totally novel assessment is arising with respect to neutrino oscillations. Pauli's principle explains physically. Einstein's cosmological constant is demystified. Dark Energy, cosmic inflation, the number of dimensions we are living in are not any more dully accepted from outside - theory is deriving all that. As a matter of fact, the gateway to developing Quantum Gravity has been widely open since Einstein, Planck, and Dirac. Only, nobody has passed its threshold; nuclear fission had changed priorities. Then, Gell-Mann had knocked at the door of the GUT. This time, however, it was the "Standard" model to crash the door back into its frame, and the string model sealed the lock. - Meanwhile, the model succeeded in smuggling into the open underneath the feet of its jailers, ready for being applied more extensively.

The Nobel Prize–winner shares “a masterful journey through humankind’s scientific coming-of-age” from the Greeks to modern times (Brian Greene). In this rich, irreverent, and compelling history, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg takes us across centuries of human striving to unravel the mysteries of the world. This sweeping saga ranges from ancient Miletus to medieval Baghdad and Oxford, from Plato’s Academy and the Museum of Alexandria to the cathedral school of Chartres and the Royal Society of London. Weinberg shows that, while the scientists of ancient and medieval times lack our understanding of the world, they also lacked the knowledge, tools, and intellectual framework necessary to go about understand it. Yet over the centuries, through the struggle to solve such mysteries as the curious backward movement of the planets and the rise and fall of the tides, the modern discipline of science eventually emerged. An illuminating exploration of the way we consider and analyze the world around us, To Explain the World is a sweeping, ambitious account of how difficult it was to discover the goals and methods of modern science, and the impact of this discovery on human knowledge and development.

We live in a hyper-connected world and are bombarded with news and other information, via our phones, computers, TVs, and radios. People don't have the time or energy to sift through all the data. That's where infographics come in. While the idea of illustrating facts and figures has been around for centuries, it is only recently, with the introduction of the internet, that infographics have really taken off as a medium to convey all types of information. This book shows the versatility of infographics by presenting an amazing compendium of 264 charts. Illustrating topics such as history, economics, sports, music, art, science, and culture, the infographics in this book are all designed to be easy to understand, thought-provoking, and elegant. You can explore the evolution of electric vehicles from a tricycle to a Tesla Model 3, discover how supermarkets trick you into buying more food than you need, and see how much work goes into creating a video game. While you browse the pages, you'll find yourself incidentally learning thousands of new things that will astonish you. By condensing and conveying facts as an illustrated narrative, infographics tell stories that everyone can explore, understand, and enjoy.

An “engaging and enlightening” (The Wall Street Journal) argument that innovation and progress are often achieved by revisiting and retooling ideas from the past rather than starting from scratch—from Guardian columnist and contributor to The Atlantic, Stephen Poole. Innovation is not always as innovative as it may seem. Rethink is the story of how old ideas that were mocked or ignored for centuries are now storming back to the cutting edge of science and technology, informing the way we lead our lives. This is the story of Lamarck and the modern-day epigeneticist whose research vindicated his mocked two hundred-year-old theory of evolution; of the return of cavalry use in the war in Afghanistan; of Tesla’s bringing back the electric car; and of the cognitive scientists who made breakthroughs by turning to ancient Greek philosophy. “An anecdote-rich tour through the centuries” (The New York Times), with examples from business to philosophy to science, Rethink shows what we can learn by revisiting old, discarded ideas and considering them from a novel perspective. From within all these rich anecdotes of overlooked ideas come good ones, helping us find new ways to think about ideas in our own time—including out-of-the-box proposals in the boardroom to grand projects for social and political change. “Clever and entertaining...a thoughtful and thought-provoking book” (The Sunday Times, London), Rethink helps you see the world differently. Armed with this picture of the surprising evolution of ideas and their triumphant second lives, and in the bestselling tradition of Malcolm Gladwell, Poole’s new approach to a familiar topic is fun, convincing, and brilliant—and offers a clear takeaway: if you want to affect the future, start by taking a look at the past.

All people desire to know. We want to not only know what has happened, but also why it happened, how it happened, whether it will happen again, whether it can be made to happen or not happen, and so on. In short, what we want are explanations. Asking and answering explanatory questions lies at the very heart of scientific practice. The primary aim of this book is to help readers understand how science explains the world. This book explores the nature and contours of scientific explanation, how such explanations are evaluated, as well as how they lead to knowledge and understanding. As well as providing an introduction to scientific explanation, it also tackles misconceptions and misunderstandings, while remaining accessible to a general audience with little or no prior philosophical training.
