SMEs are slow adopters of new technologies and understandably so because they are entangled in a vicious cycle of poverty. It is even more so for SMEs located in developing markets such as the sub-Saharan Africa. SMEs in these areas are faced with several difficult institutional and cultural bottlenecks which often impede their access to and use of new technologies. In Nigeria, the recently introduced cashless policy is one of many strategies intended to enhance SMEs' chances in the global e-commerce market as much as the general Nigerian economy. Studies reveal that Nigerian SMEs are slow to adopt and use this new technological innovation called the e-payment system (EPS) even when it can improve their chances to participate successfully in e-commerce. However, there is little in the literature to understand why and what is needed to be done to encourage and facilitate their participation in adopting and using this technology. This area of study has not been sufficiently explored. Thus, this thesis fills the void and explores the factors influencing EPS adoption and extent of use by SMEs in Nigeria.

The proliferation of handheld devices and the high-speed mobile network have created another revolution in the world of commerce. Despite the continuous emerging payment solutions and abundant facilitating technologies, the level of mobile payment system adoption is quite low. Researchers focused their attention mainly on mobile payment business model and mobile payment software/infrastructures architectures with relatively little attention paid to the factors influencing the adoption. Moreover, researchers paid very little attention on issues regarding mobile payment system adoption in developing countries. Accordingly, this study examined the factors that determine the adoption of mobile payment system and how their influence differs by gender of the students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used with three additional variables to form the conceptual model. The study was conducted in three Universities in Kano state, Nigeria. Purposive sampling method was used with a total valid 214 respondents which involved the students of Bayero University Kano (BUK), North-West University, and Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil, Kano, Nigeria. The results of the multiple regression analysis revealed that perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), perceived compatibility (PC) and social norm (SN) have significant and positive correlation with the behavioural intention to adopt mobile payment system. The findings from the independent t-test also revealed that there is a significant difference on the influence of PEOU and SN among the gender of the students with male having high perceived ease use (PEOU) over female counterpart, while social norm (SN) influences female more than their male counterpart in adopting mobile payment. The study provided empirical support of the background theory outside the context of developed countries and contributed significantly to the existing literature in the field of mobile payment. Secondly, the study provided input about the critical success factors of the adoption of mobile payment system among mobile users. Thirdly, the study will help authorities to make relevant adjustments regarding the cashless-policy to make it more effective in the economy.

Over the past few decades, the world has witnessed advancements in electronic payments. From debit cards also regarded as "e-cheques" through to credit cards seen as "e-loans" to electronic purses "e-purses" which are essentially a form of "e-cash," consumers, merchants and issuers have begun to take advantage of advancements in telecommunication technology to facilitate payments using these means. However, although in the early 1990s, it was suggested by some payment analysts that smart cards particularly those with e-purse capabilities would lead to a cashless society, this has not been the case. This book aims to provide reasons for this slow adoption of electronic purses by comparing user adoption between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to arrive at the salient factors which are responsible for discouraging the adoption of this technology. Finally, using both qualitative and quantitative data from a diverse sample set within the two countries, I reach conclusions regarding which country would more readily adopt this method of payment.

Electronic payment (e-payment) processes were introduced into China in 1998. Expansion however did not really begin until 2005 when the country entered a period of rapid growth. The development of e-payment services accelerated the quick growth of the online market now using e-payment as its preferred settlement method. This expansion, compounded by burgeoning e-commerce-driven needs, created enormous market volumes and profits, thus further stimulating e-payment growth. This empirical study involved the preparation and administration of a survey instrument based extensively on the literature.

This study examines the factors that influence user adoption of e-banking services in Nigeria. The questions this study hoped to answer involved whether there are significant differences between adopters and non-adopters of e-banking with respect to gender, tribe, age, income, education level area of residence, salary payment method and internet literacy level and with respect to their perceptions towards e-banking security, awareness, ease of use, privacy and trust. Primary data were collected from using a self-administered questionnaire uploaded online for voluntary respondents within Nigeria. The data obtained were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, chi-squared tests, and independent t-tests. Findings revealed that gender, tribe, age, education level area of residence, internet literacy and e-banking awareness had significant effects in influencing user adoption of e-banking while income level sector of employment and method of payment had no significant effect on customer adoption of e-banking in Nigeria. Also, based on respondents' perceptions towards e-banking, the conclusion is that there is a significant difference between adopters and non-adopters with respect to their perception towards e-banking security, e-banking privacy, ease of use and trust in the Nigerian e-banking system. Finally, as a result of the findings, the researcher recommends that Nigerian banks incorporate biometric authentication into their e-banking system to enhance security.
