This exploratory study identifies the factors which contribute to effective knowledge integration in global innovation projects through an in-depth analysis of two case studies. Knowledge integration is analysed in two components: knowledge (individual expertise), and integration (working together). Our analysis highlights three distinct ways that individuals think about individual expertise: individual knowledge and competence; feeling valued; and unfamiliar areas. We also identify four ways in which individuals think about working together: good social relations; cultural distance; negotiation skills; and better results through working with others. Using examples from the case studies, we discuss how these factors enable knowledge integration in globally distributed innovation projects. We also propose a model indicating how these factors impact on knowledge integration and innovation performance. This study contributes towards management guidance, which is currently lacking in the area of knowledge integration.

Practitioners operate in a necessary reality. We work in a space where project performance is above theory or methodology. In the best environments, delivery and an affirmative culture are what matter most. In the worst, it is politics and survival. In any environment we are challenged to adopt best practices and adapt our style to the environment in which the project is occurring. This is a book about those best practices and practitioner experiences. It is a must have reference and guide book for project managers, general managers, business leaders and project management researchers. This book is the result of the hard work and dedication of more than 35 authors from more than 15 countries across four continents. It brings a diversity of experience, professional and personal. "Countries splinter, regional trading blocks grow, the global economy becomes even more interconnected. " Lester Thurow, The Future o/Capitalism, 1996 Globalization has changed the face of R&D. Local knowledge clusters are not only tapped by multinationals but by small and medium-sized companies as well. Global R&D networks speed up the evolution of technology and ask for new management concepts. The complexity is abundant: Information and communication technology creates the global village, but customers become more fickle and request their own specific produ~ts, well localized, well tuned into their present business. More and more integrated technology is needed to cope with these needs. The danger of over-engineering has never been as great as today. The question is very often not whether some new features are technically feasible but whether customers are willing to accept and pay for it. Most multinationals have just grown with these developments; most R&D organizations are what they are just because of historical reasons. Only now some global R&D patterns are emerging. Customer-focused R&D, virtual teams and dispersed R&D departments have been shaped deliberately by some large compa nies, with impressive success.

Both PM and KM are highly relevant in the current global economy. Integration of KM and PM improve organisational performance in delivering products or services better, faster, and cheaper. KM helps in improving communication, productivity, decision making, and collaboration within a project team and across projects. Applying KM principles improves skills and experience of project team members. Using KM with PM will lead to several benefits such as better project integration, reduced risk associated with unknown factors, and continuous improvement of project execution.
