Robert G. Moeller is the first historian of modern German women to use social policy as a lens to focus on society's conceptions of gender difference and "woman's place." He investigates the social, economic, and political status of women in West Germany after World War II to reveal how the West Germans, emerging from the rubble of the Third Reich, viewed a reconsideration of gender relations as an essential part of social reconstruction. The debate over "woman's place" in the fifties was part of West Germany's confrontation with the ideological legacy of National Socialism. At the same time, the presence of the Cold War influenced all debates about women and the family. In response to the "woman question," West Germans defined the boundaries not only between women and men, but also between East and West. Moeller's study shows that public policy is a crucial arena where women's needs, capacities, and possibilities are discussed, identified, defined, and reinforced. Nowhere more explicitly than in the first decade of West Germany's history did, in Joan Scott's words, "politics construct gender and gender construct politics." Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Die Wahl, Familie im Hinblick auf die spezifischen Wandlungsprozesse, denen sie im Zuge der Modernisierung unterliegt, sowie die Frage nach ihrer Eingliederung in den Prozeß des gesellschaftlichen Übergangs zur Postmoderne zu untersuchen, zum Gegenstand meiner Arbeit zu machen, ist in erster Linie bedingt durch mein Interesse an familiensoziologischen Fragestellungen allgemein. Als ich mit Herrn Dr. phil. Stein das Themengebiet auf die Analyse der Familie sowie der Pluralität familialer Lebensformen in der modernen und in der postmodernen Gesellschaft eingrenzte, dachte ich, es stellt sicherlich die interessante Anforderung, Familie einmal in einem ganz speziellen Zusammenhang zu untersuchen. Ich muß gestehen, als ich anfing, mich in das Themengebiet einzulesen, erfaßte mich augenblicklich eine Begeisterung, die sich auf meine gesamte Beschäftigung mit der Analyse der Familie an sich aber auch in Zusammenhang mit ihrem Einfluß auf die Gesellschaft, sowie der These, sie befände sich in einer anhaltenden Krise, die oftmals, meiner Ansicht nach fälschlicherweise, als ein Strukturverfall der Familie angesehen wird, niederschlug. In nahezu allen Publikationen über Familie seit den sechziger Jahren taucht diese These über den Strukturverfall der Familie und damit zusammenhängend die Frage auf, ob sich die Familie seit Beginn des gesellschaftlichen Wandels hin zur Moderne in einer stetigen Krise befindet. Ich habe mich bei der eingehenden Beschäftigung mit diesem Thema davon überzeugen können, daß gerade durch die veränderten Bedingungen, die die Umstrukturierung der Gesellschaft hin zur Moderne mit sich gebracht hat, die Familie tatsächlich einem enormen Wandlungsprozeß unterliegt. Dieser resultiert wohl in erster Linie aus der heutigen Pluralisierung der Lebensformen und damit einhergehend den erschwerten Definitionsbedingungen einer spezifischen, übergeordnet geltenden Familienform (vgl. S. 14 f). Neben der zweifelsfrei definierten Kernfamilie reicht das Spektrum heutiger familialer Lebensformen von nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften über Commuter-Ehen und living-apart-together -Beziehungen bis hin zu kinderlosen Ehen und Fortsetzungsfamilien . Sicherlich haben die bedeutsamen, modernisierungsspezifisch bedingten Veränder-ungen innerhalb der Familie diese wiederum in eine nicht zu unterschätzende Krise gestürzt, die sich in einer gewissen Desorganisation ihrer Binnenstruktur äußert. Des Vorsitzenden der Arbeitsgemeinschaft katholisch-sozialer Bildungswerke Die Idee zu dieser Neuauflage wurde geboren, ehe der Druck der ersten Auflage abgeschlossen war. Das Curriculum "Familie in der Gesellschaft - Gestalt, Standort, Funktion", das von der Arbeitsgemeinschaft katholisch-sozialer Bil dungswerke (AKSB) 1978 als Beitrag zur politischen Bildung der Offentlichkeit vorgelegt wurde, hatte einige Entwicklungen -insbesondere in der Familienpo litik - und neueste Ergebnisse der Familiensoziologie nicht mehr beriicksichti gen konnen. Die wissenschaftliche Erarbeitung des Textes der ersten Auflage war niimlich bereits Ende 1975 abgeschlossen worden, die Veroffentlichung konnte leider erst drei Jahre spiiter erfolgen. Aus der Idee erwuchs der BeschluB zu einer Neuauflage -oder einer Ergiinzung in einem dritten Band zum Curriculum -, den der Vorstand mit Beschreibung, Begriindung und Arbeitsplan der Mitgliederversammlung der AKSB am 28./ 29. November 1979 vorlegte. Die Mitgliederversammlung folgte diesem Vor schlag und erteilte den Auftrag. Mit Riicksicht auf knappe Forderungsmittel konnte die Bundeszentrale fUr politische Bildung das Projekt jedoch erst ein Jahr spiiter fOrdern. Ende 1980 trafen sich die wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgruppe unter Prof. Dr. Heinrich Ebel und die Projektgruppe der AKSB zur konstituierenden Sitzung. Nach vier Sitzungen im Jahr 1981, sieben Sitzungen 1982, in denen man sich u. a. inhaltlich mit 10 neu erarbeiteten Texten befaBte, konnte die Erarbeitung der vorliegenden Auflage am 12. Oktober 1982 abgeschlossen werden, die Endfas sung lag zum 20. November 1982 vor.

This book was nurtured by the belief that the new dynamics of today's and tomorrow's aging has not yet been treated well in the gerontology literature. Several questions drove the choice of substance for the book: What kind of new dynamics of aging deserves consideration? What kinds of theories and fields are at the core of treating such a new dynamics? And what kind of empirical evidence should be considered? The master hypothesis on which the book is based maintains that the new dynamics of old age is best observed in a range of everyday aging contexts that have been undergoing major change since the second half of the 20th century. In particular, five areas of new and persistent dynamics are treated in depth: the social environment, with a focus on cohort effects in social relations and the consideration of family relations and elders as care redelivers; the home environment, with emphasis on housing and quality of life, relocation and urban aging issues; the outdoor environment, with consideration of out-of-home activity patterns, car-driving behaviour and the leisure world of aging; the technological environment, with treatments of the role of the Internet and the potential of technology for aging outcomes and; and the societal environment with a focus on global aging, the new politics of old age and older persons as market consumers.
