I poeti moderni hanno spesso scritto in versi sciolti che rispettano le misure tradizionali praticate da secoli pur senza rime e senza curarsi affatto di strofe o altri artifici retorici. I contemporanei scrivono poesie in versi liberi, hanno abbandonato cioè anche le misure dei loro versi, e certo non si preoccupano di rime, anche se la rima baciata, quella di cuore con amore, per molti ancora, forse pur scherzosamente, vuol dire poesia per antonomasia. Eppure tutti i grandissimi, grandi, affermati poeti non possono fare a meno di conoscere le regole del “fare poesia”, le tecniche; non possono fare a meno della “cassetta degli strumenti”, anche e soprattutto quando consapevolmente ne scelgono altri. E dunque ci voleva, ho pensato io che vengo da studi classici, che ho insegnato poesia, scritto poesie, soprattutto letto poesie, ci voleva quello che non ho più trovato in libreria: un manualetto agile di metrica italiana ad uso dei poeti nuovissimi e giovanissimi che per fortuna non abbandonano quest’arte.
