This edited volume explores how fashion brands deal with legacy by looking at the preservation of heritage and knowledge and how this builds a bridge to the future. Bringing together different reflections from the world of fashion, from gloves to virtual jewels, from luxury brand’s digital narratives to historical contexts, each chapter offers a narrative that is contemporary, yet linked to historical contexts. With these narratives, the book reveals how innovation builds on heritage, and how locally rooted traditional techniques connect to contemporary global production. It illustrates how ancestral processes renew, encouraging us to produce and consume more responsibly. Split into three parts, the book firstly covers narrative and knowledge in different contexts before delving in to narrative, brand building and creativity with case studies. The final section centres on digital narratives with new consumers. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that multidisciplinary knowledge of the past is essential to the understanding of the contemporary.

Italy is a major player in the global fashion industry, yet little has been written about its contribution to fashion curation. This book explores the management, display and curation of Italian fashion heritage, highlighting the role played by companies and industry associations. By contextualising fashion curation within Italy's economy, culture and art-historical tradition, Curating Italian Fashion unfolds the ties between the preservation of fashion heritage and corporate policies. It traces the shift of companies from sponsors to cultural producers and discusses the different uses of archives and exhibitions. Through the critical analysis of key examples such as Salvatore Ferragamo and Pitti Immagine, this book illustrates how the inevitable commercial interests underlying fashion curation can exist alongside the scholarly contribution of corporate initiatives. Most importantly, it defines the curatorial approaches developed by the involvement of the industry in fashion curation, thus providing an overarching interpretation of the characteristics of this practice in Italy. Matteo Augello provides an unprecedented insight into the management of Italian fashion heritage and presents a comprehensive account of the development of fashion curation in Italy, drawing from archival records, existing literature and oral history. This book is essential reading for scholars, industry professionals and students interested in the intersections of curation, heritage, national identity and corporate cultural policies.

"Since the 2000s, fashion exhibitions have become some of the most popular displays presented in museums. Fashion brands celebrate anniversaries with blockbuster retrospectives and lavish catalogues, and increasingly exhibit archive pieces in their stores. This book explores the management, display and curation of Italian fashion heritage, highlighting the role played by companies and industry associations. By contextualising fashion curation within Italy's economy, culture and art-historical tradition, this book unfolds the ties between the preservation of fashion heritage and corporate policies. Over the past four years I've worked on a programme of events in Central and South Asia - New Silk Road - which explored the use of traditional crafts skills and iconography from the region within contemporary practice. The next stage of this programme will be an exhibition of contemporary fashion from the UK which focuses on the work of designers who incorporate elements of their cultural heritage within their work. 'Reconstruction' - which will open in Astana, Kazakhstan in May - celebrates the work of seven of the UK's leading fashion designers. Their approaches differ markedly, but I have selected work for this exhibition which demonstrates a shared philosophy: a skilful distillation of elements of their respective pasts - either personal moments or a collective cultural heritage - to create contemporary garments with narrative.

An amazing visual journey celebrating Ghea's fortieth anniversary as a fashion designer and as a promoter of Indonesian textile crafts. Born in Rotterdam and educated in Europe, Ghea is one of Indonesia's most famous fashion designers, renowned for having promoted a renaissance in Indonesia's ethnic textile tradition. After graduating from a fashion college in London, she returned to her country and established her fashion-design studio in 1980, and she has since opened several ateliers and boutiques in Jakarta. Her mission: to develop, celebrate, and promote her country's fashion heritage. Her textiles make strong use of folklore, including the Jumputan tie-dyed fabrics (the Pelangi Palembang) that have become her hallmark. A role model for women, entrepreneurs, designers, and visionary people, Ghea went international early in her career. Since her very first forays into fashion, Ghea has been instrumental in establishing the association of fashion designers (IPMI) in her country for the professionalization of fashion design. Ghea has given Indonesian fashion worldwide attention, showcasing her collections in Paris, Cannes, Marrakech, Kuala Lumpur, London, and Milan. Her shows have been attended by international celebrities, and she has often been featured in major fashion magazines, like Harper's Bazaar and Prestige Indonesia. This is an inspirational book for many young designers who need to acquire the know-how to sustain their own creative practice.
