This is a unique collection of ten of Chesterton's famous Father Brown stories which puts special emphasis on the role that Brown's Catholic faith played in helping him solve the murder mysteries. As Dorothy Sayers once wrote, Chesterton was "the first man of our time to introduce the great name of God into a detective story ... to enlarge the boundaries of the detective story by making it deal with death and real wickedness and real, that is to say, divine judgment." This paperback Father Brown edition includes generous footnotes (not available in other editions) which help to clarify the literary and historical allusions made by Father Brown. It is based on the texts of the original editions by Chesterton for assurance of complete authenticity, and is set in easily readable type. These are excellent short detective yarns in the classic British tradition of Sherlock Holmes - puzzling concoctions of mysterious crimes, dubious suspects and ambiguous clues. They are among the very best of the Father Brown stories.

This volume contains the 53 stories of Father Brown, the beloved character created by English novelist G. K. Chesterton, who stars in 51 detective short stories (and two framing vignettes). Chesterton based the character on Father John O'Connor (1870-1952), a parish priest in Bradford who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922. Father Brown is a short, stumpy Roman Catholic Church priest, "formerly of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London", with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. Unlike the more famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown's methods tend to be intuitive rather than deductive. This volume contains ALL OF FATHER BROWN STORIES, included the three stories left out of most collections: "The Donnington Affair" "The Vampire of the Village" "The Mask of Midas" . The following is the list of Father Brown stories included in this volume: 1. Has religion, the church, or Christianity become convoluted? confusing? disappointing? We live in a time where church attendance is declining, where faith has become so deeply intertwined with politics, ideologies, theologies and personal opinions that it's seemingly impossible to find Truth. In all of this, we have lost sight of the center of it all—that is, the utterly enchanting person of Jesus Christ. In G.K. Chesterton’s Everlasting Man, the reader will be brought back to the very foundation of the Christian faith: that is, Jesus—His life, death and resurrection. G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was arguably the greatest writer and thinker of the 20th century—his keen intellect, wit, spirit and wisdom would go on to influence writers like J. R. R. Tolkien, Ernest Hemingway, C. S. Lewis, T.S. Eliot and many more. Chesterton’s ability to broach controversial and diverse topics with a sense of humor and the use of paradox has made him one of the most influential voices in both Christian and secular spheres. In Everlasting Man, Chesterton brilliantly examines the history of man from a Christ-centered perspective, appealing to the mind and heart as he points to the power, truth and supremacy of Jesus by exploring: The uniqueness of Jesus’ claims Jesus’ ability to unite religion and philosophy Jesus’ radical and shocking teaching Jesus’ affirmation of human goodness The hope of Jesus’ resurrection for all mankind Chesterton writes, "There are two ways of getting home; and one of them is to stay there. The other is to walk ’round the whole world till we come back to the same place." Everlasting Man will lead us home—to the person of Jesus, to the foundation of faith, and perhaps even to the doors of the Church.

Father Brown, an ordinary priest whose unremarkable exterior conceals extraordinary crime-solving ability, is celebrated for his solutions to metaphysical mysteries, a genre perfected by his creator, G. K. Chesterton. More than lighthearted comedies built around puzzling crimes, these superbly written tales contain deeply perceptive philosophical reflections. The Innocence of Father Brown (1911) was the first collection of stories featuring the ecclesiastical sleuth and is widely considered the best. In this annotated edition of the collection, the Chesterton scholar Martin Gardner provides detailed notes and background information on various aspects of such stories as "The Blue Cross," "The Secret Garden," "The Invisible Man," "The Hammer of God," "The Eye of Apollo," and seven more, as well as an informative introduction and an extensive bibliography. Included also are eight illustrations reproduced from the first edition. The result is an indispensable companion for all Chesterton enthusiasts and a perfect introduction for anyone who has yet to meet the incomparable Father Brown.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown mysteries, BBC One Daytime has commissioned a new 10-part drama series for January 2013 to bring the priest-turned-detective back to life. BBC Books will be publishing a new edition of the original and complete short stories to tie-in to transmission. Set in the early-twentieth century, Father Brown's world is quintessentially English; crime scenes await in country houses, rural parish churches and quaint gardens as well as foggy London streets and shadowy railway stations. Father Brown may be a kindly cleric, but his bumbling nature disguises a detective mind to rival Sherlock Holmes... The character of Father Brown, brought to life by Mark Williams, is based on a real parish priest and the idea that priests, through hearing Confession, know the worst of human nature more than anyone, including the police. Father Brown uses his experiences to put himself into the mind of the criminal to solve each mystery and catch the perpetrators.
