Avant même l'entrée à l'école maternelle, on constate déjà des inégalités en terme d'accès à l'éducation. Dans un souci d'équité, le rôle de l'école et a fortiori de l'école maternelle est de compenser ces inégalités. La lecture joue un rôle important dans cette culture. Mais l'école ne doit pas faire de la lecture une contrainte ; elle se doit de transmettre l'envie de lire afin que les élèves se plongent dans les livres en dehors de la sphère scolaire. Nous nous demanderons comment la lecture d'albums de littérature jeunesse peut favoriser le goût de la lecture et l'ouverture culturelle. Un dispositif a été mis en place pendant sept semaines dans une classe de moyenne section : ateliers de lecture (élire son album préféré, trier des écrits, etc.), mise en réseau des ouvrages lus à travers l'élaboration d'un cahier littéraire, lectures à haute voix quotidiennes faites par l'enseignante ou par des intervenants (association Lire et faire lire, élèves de CP). Nous constatons des résultats encourageants : les élèves se dirigent plus régulièrement vers les livres, ils témoignent d'une plus grande envie d'apprendre à lire, ils échangent entre eux à ce propos et sollicitent davantage l'enseignante ou leurs parents pour demander des lectures.
