August 1933 begann Lion Feuchtwangers Odyssee: Man erkannte ihm die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft ab und er emigrierte nach Frankreich. Eine Odyssee, die schließlich 1940 fern von Berlin in New York endete. Dort schrieb Feuchtwanger auch seinen bekannten Erlebnisbericht „Der Teufel in Frankreich“. Das Buch ist in Kapitel eingeteilt, die die Namen der unterschiedlichen – freiwilligen wie unfreiwilligen – Migrationsorte tragen: Les Milles, Bayonne, Nîmes, Marseille. Dass Les Milles vom Gedächtnisort zum bikulturellen Gedenkort geworden ist – dazu hat der Roman beigetragen. Er ist ein Zeugnis dieser Zeit. Meine Hausarbeit untersucht Feuchtwangers drei Werke „Der Teufel in Frankreich“, „Die Geschwister Oppermann“ und „Exil“ unter der Thematik Migrations-, Erinnerungs-, Gedächtnis- und Gedenkorte.

Para conseguir la veracidad del retrato de los tipos, el autor tuvo que borrar la realidad fotográfica de cada rostro. La novela Los hermanos Oppermann no reproduce hombres reales, sino históricos. El material sobre las concepciones, moral y usos de los populares en Alemania se encuentra en el libro de Adolf Hitler Mi lucha, en los relatos de quienes se escaparon de los campos de concentración y especialmente en las notificaciones oficiales de la Gaceta del Reich del año 1933.
