La retransmisión en directo de los atentados del 11-S contra el World Trade Center no hizo sino confirmar hasta qué punto vivíamos en un mundo condicionado por el imaginario cinematográfico. Lo visto en las pantallas aquel 11 de septiembre de 2001 había sido imaginado en numerosas ocasiones por el cine de Hollywood. Sin embargo, fue precisamente ese mismo cine, en otro tiempo tan «visionario», el que reaccionó tarde y de manera vacilante ante unos atentados que cambiaron el mundo. La que no tardó en ponerse a la altura de las circunstancias fue la ficción televisiva norteamericana. Series como 24, The Shield, Turno de guardia, South Park, Los Soprano, C.S.I., El Ala Oeste de la Casa Blanca o The Wire se apresuraron a tomarle el pulso a la historia y no dudaron en hacer del 11?S, directa, alegórica y hasta sincrónicamente, un motivo dramático más. La ficción televisiva made in USA, lejos de mirar hacia otro lado o asumir, sin más, las «razones» gubernamentales, se apresuró a intentar reformular nuestro vapuleado imaginario a partir de un tema tan delicado, complejo y poliédrico como el del 11-S. Series como Rescue Me o Fringe, nos animan, aún hoy, a seguir hurgando en todas esas heridas colaterales que, lejos de haber cicatrizado definitivamente, continúan todavía escandalosamente abiertas, supurantes y pendientes de diagnóstico. Permanezcan pues atentos a sus pantallas.

La tercera edad de oro de la ficción televisiva ha favorecido la proliferación de series de gran despliegue técnico y a la vez de narrativas que describen la intimidad y la rutina cotidiana de los protagonistas. Son obras que nos presentan personajes alejados de la heroicidad, representados a menudo dentro del espacio doméstico, que ha pasado a ser un lugar clave para la descripción y evolución de los personajes. Partiendo de la premisa que la ficción televisiva desarrolla una clara función de referencia y legitimación social, creando estereotipos y modelos en los que los espectadores se identifican, este libro analiza veinte de las series contemporáneas más populares, reflexionando sobre el rol paternal y maternal de sus protagonistas. En algunas series se encuentran ejemplos que se alejan de la descripción de la familia patriarcal convencional. Destacamos así la pluralidad de discursos que se están ofreciendo, aunque también observamos que muchas de ellas, a pesar de un envoltorio transgresor, siguen reproduciendo roles que alimentan los valores familiares tradicionales.

Este libro parte de la idea de que en el contexto actual realidad y ciencia ficción son una misma cosa. Por un lado, la ciencia ficción ha ido evolucionando de una forma dinámica, incorporando el pulso de la realidad para (re)interpretarla mediante sus propios mitos, enriquecidos no solo con la forma audiovisual sino con un abundante equipaje conceptual y estético procedente de la literatura, la ilustración, el cómic e incluso la divulgación científica. Por otro lado, los estilemas del género se han incorporado definitivamente al imaginario popular, en los campos de la publicidad, el videoclip o incluso el arte contemporáneo. Por todo ello, conviene redifinir la propia evolución del género abandonando ya ciertas convicciones canónicas que hoy resultan algo simplistas. Mediante el análisis de 50 títulos esenciales del género, en este libro se dibuja un panorama multidimensional, que muestra que la ciencia ficción —como el terror, la fantasía o manifestaciones colaterales— ha sido capaz de reproducirse en canales distantes pero comunicados haciendo posible la generación de un macroconcepto, o macrogénero, como es el fantástico, que goza de una excelente salud comercial y cultural.

¿Es la imagen que de la política ofrecen las series de televisión cínica o utópica? Este libro nace con la pretensión de dar cuenta de las series pertenecientes al drama político y, gracias al análisis de los autores que conforman esta obra, describir la representación de lo político en el imaginario televisivo de ficción contemporáneo. Para hacerlo, se ha dado cierta e inevitable primacía a la producción estadounidense (House of Cards, The Good Wife, The Newsroom, Louie, The Kennedys), seguida de la ficción anglosajona y europea (Borgen, The Hour, The Thick of It, The Red Riding Trilogy, Crematorio). Uno de los ejes que trata este monográfico es si la imagen política ofrecida en dichas representaciones audiovisuales es utópica o más bien distópica y cínica. La función de cuarto poder del periodismo en la era de la convergencia mediática y la llamada nueva política es también un tema importante en este volumen.
