First published in 1993, Fictions of Collective Life argues that the distinctive forms of modern popular culture can only be understood through the ways we dramatize public life, and that in the dramatic ‘fiction’ of collective experience we represent the terms of social order. The argument is richly illustrated with chapters on the theoretical character of performance in modernity; photography as the first means of mass representation; the nature of public discourse in mass democracy; and the elaboration of space for theatrical performance; and the marketing of culture and communication through mass systems of distribution. The book aims to provide a framework within which any of the popular cultural forms of modernity can be understood. Drawing upon and adapting the extensive literature of cultural studies, the author offers a distinctive and original sociological perspective on the relationship between individual and community in popular culture. Our Collective Life is a non-fiction memoir of a person diagnosed with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) is a condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states, are present in the one body. In our case we are the Collective, a group of 19 individuals (at the time of writing) sharing a body and trying to navigate our way through this one life. We each have unique personality traits and characteristics as well as differing thoughts, opinions and often even memories.To an outsider or a layperson, this book may sound like a work of fiction. However as crazy as it may sound, this is our life. The book is written primarily surrounding a period when Jo (the one born into the body) was struggling with severe depression, suicidal tendencies and guilt as well as the strong denial that is often characteristic of those with DID. Through the pages, the reader will understand more of the therapeutic process we all continue to undertake, as well as follow our journey as we learn more about Jo and ourselves.NB. It is widely accepted that DID invariably arises due to severe abuse/neglect in the early childhood. Whilst there is mention of episodes of abuse/trauma, Our Collective Life does NOT go into graphic detail about these incidents. There is however, swearing/cussing and graphic details of self-injury.

Poetry and Flash fiction stories from a lifetime. The following pages were written over a period of eighteen years. It was a period of growth for me on the journey of becoming the woman I am today. Depression and bulimia have always played within a dark corner of my life. I have suffered from them both since an early age. One of the ways I have dealt with my "problems," is through pen to paper. Writing helped me escape. It gave me a friend to talk to when I was alone and simply so needed someone. Afterall one can be in a room full of loud boisterous people and still be alone. Writing became my friend and my soul mate. I will always be thankful for Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Virtual Studios. During some of my darkest times, I turned to the Zoetrope to write, read and experience life. I was so amazed after not having visited the studio in several years that twenty -eight of my flash fictions stories were still available to me. The following is my struggle with life, beginning and ending of relationships, some of it happened to me, some of it was mere fantasy. This book primarily focuses on the concept of forgetting, with particular emphasis on how we can trace the forgotten in contemporary life writing and memory texts. It consists of two main parts: the first concentrates on life writing in particular and what the author calls “scenes of forgetting”; the second examines both fiction and autobiographies that deal with questions of collective memory/forgetting. The book’s principal aim is to map methods and strategies writers employ when writing the forgotten – it argues that forgetting is a constant companion in any memory text and plays a decisive role in the memory work performed in the texts. The main theoretical objective is to examine carefully the connection between collective memory and personal memory, by drawing from two disciplines at once: memory studies and theories on life writing.
