Fieldwork in Ukrainian Children’s Literature showcases the work of prominent scholars of children’s literature from Ukraine and the diaspora as it traces the history of books written, marketed for, and circulating among young people since the rise of Ukraine’s nationhood in the nineteenth century. In its focus on ideology and historical context, the collection takes an interdisciplinary and transnational approach. It places titles and trends in broader context, considering the socio-political situation, changing taste, and the history of institutions that shape the production and reception of children’s literature. The collection addresses folklore and the beginnings of a distinct tradition of Ukrainian children’s literature produced in the nineteenth century; the role played by children’s literature in the maintenance of the Ukrainian literary tradition during the Soviet era; and the flourishing Ukrainian book market, with the appearance of numerous new genres and forms, and the growing significance of Ukrainian books around the world. The Borders of Empathy in Children’s Fiction centres the question of how reading fiction develops our moral imagination and our capacities to think and feel with others. The question is approached with a good dose of scepticism, revising tensions between ethical, aesthetical, and pedagogical dimensions when certain books, films, and other cultural materials are recommended for children. This volume examines how texts addressed to children are meant to assist socioemotional education and whether we put forward adultist assumptions around such conceptualisations of the emotional. The book is organised into nine chapters, with some of them focusing on "difficult" themes —such as violence, xenophobia, death, migration, as well as gender and social exclusions— and some others on more general relationships between emotions, media, and education. The chapters combine a textual analysis of recommended cultural materials for children with insights from empirical research and ethnographic approaches to children’s cultures. A common thread throughout the book is the open question about the epistemic injustices in knowing children and childhood and how this may be overcome by shifting our research practices with posthumanist philosophies.

What linkages are there between Russia’s approaches to warfare today with those before, during, and after the Soviet era? Assessing Russia's Actions in Ukraine and Syria, 2014–2022: Implications for the Changing Character of War investigates how Russia’s actions in Syria and Ukraine reveal more continuity than change and more evolution than revolution in warfare. These actions mostly reflect what the Kremlin perceives as changes in strategic and technological contexts, which impacts who fights wars and how wars are fought. Given historic, cultural, and other ties between Russia and Ukraine, Russia’s activities in Ukraine prior to 2022 are not easily replicable outside of the post-Soviet space. This book argues that new-generation warfare, political warfare, or full-spectrum conflict better describes Russia’s activities than hybrid warfare. John A.
