De impact van kanker is bijna niet onder woorden te brengen. Hoe kunnen we een omgang vinden met wat ons overkomt naar lichaam en ziel, naar wat deze ziekte met ons doet of ons zegt? In de vakliteratuur is het psychologisch jargon dominant, terwijl 'het andere spreken', vanuit de existentiële, spirituele gezichtshoek, op de achtergrond blijft. Dit boek wil tegemoetkomen aan deze leemte. Elf personen, met uiteenlopende levensbeschouwingen, komen aan het woord over hun omgang met deze ziekte in hun leven. Het begrip aanvaarding, in samenhang met aanverwante begrippen als ziel, zin en levensverhaal, wordt uitgewerkt als sleutelbegrip in deze opgave. Francesco Kortekaas ontrafelt de samenhang tussen de verstoring van het concrete leven, de vragen naar het bestaan en de impact op de levensbeschouwing. Als denkkader voor de gesprekken over de existentiële en spirituele opgave bij kankerpatiënten kiest hij voor het schetsen van het levensbeeld, de weergave van de persoonlijke levensvisie en het unieke levensverhaal. Francesco Kortekaas studeerde theologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit van Leiden en aan de Hogeschool voor Theologie en Pastoraat in Heerlen. Hij werkte ruim zestien jaar als RK pastoraal werker in het Psychiatrisch Centrum St.-Willibrord in Heiloo en was daarna tweeëntwintig jaar werkzaam als geestelijk verzorger in het Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in Amsterdam, een ziekenhuis en onderzoeksinstituut gespecialiseerd in oncologie. De gesprekken met patiënten, met uiteenlopende levensbeschouwingen, zijn inspiratie geweest tot dit schrijven.

Classical theism, the dominant tradition in Christian theology, has stressed the metaphysical concept of God, i.e., God's ontological transcendence and independence from the world. In this century, however, this concept of God has increasingly met with criticism. On the basis of the Bible and new philosophical considerations, it is argued that a relational concept of God better answers the fundamental concerns of the Christian faith. In this book the author investigates the questions of whether one can conceive of God apart from the metaphysical attributes and whether reflection on the biblical depiction of God leads necessarily to a relational concept of God. The author explores the questions by examining the relational concepts of God found in two contemporary German theologians, Jurgen Moltmann and Wolfhart Pannenberg, and uses the divine attribute of immutability as a focus for the discussion. He argues that the relational concept of God presupposes another metaphysical conception of God, which raises problems as serious as those in classical theism, and that the Bible itself, because of its nature as a narrative text, is ambiguous in many respects as far as God is concerned. A truly Christian doctrine of God must take both the metaphysical and relational aspects of God into account."
