English summary: This is a catalog of the exhibition held at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence from October 3th to 29th, 2009. "Florence by Cy DeCosse is dedicated to the city of Florence and to the friends, artists and artisans that make this city a beacon of art and culture. For over fifty years Florence has been a muse to me. When I first arrived in Florence as a Fulbright student in 1954, the city was war-damaged, with bullet holes in walls and bridges destroyed, but with an unbroken spirit. Even as the Florentines struggled to provide daily necessities, they applauded Aida in the Boboli Gardens and rebuilt the Trinita Bridge stone by stone. I began my study of photography at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana with Maestro Renzo Maggini. From him I learned principles that still guide my work today. Per più di cinquant'anni Firenze è stata la mia musa. Quando sono arrivato a Firenze per la prima volta, nel 1954, avendo ricevuto una borsa di studio Fulbright, la città era stata danneggiata dalla guerra. Le mura erano sforacchiate dai proiettili e i ponti erano stati fatti saltare in aria, ma lo spirito della città era intatto. I fiorentini lottavano per sfamarsi e coprirsi, ma applaudivano pure l' Aida nel Giardino di Boboli e ricostruirono il Ponte di Santa Trinita pietra su pietra. Iniziai i miei studi di fotografia all'Istituto d'Arte di Porta Romana con il Maestro Renzo Maggini, il quale mi insegnò i principii che ancora oggi mi guidano nel mio lavoro di fotografo. The Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand-Duke Pietro Leopold, is the oldest scientific museum in Europe. With this second volume on the Botanical Collection, Florence University Press continues its series dedicated to the six Sections of the Museum. The first part of the volume recounts the birth of botanical sciences in Florence and the history of the museum collections from sixteenth century to today. Then follows the second part which describes the historical and modern Herbaria, for each of which the main events that went to their formation, the importance of the plants they contain and biographical information on those who built the collections are described. The third section expounds the other collections in the Botanical Section of the Museum, among which of particular interest are the wax models of plants and fruits, manufactured by the old Grand-ducal Ceroplastics Laboratory, the wood collection, plaster of Paris mushrooms and the eighteenth century still life paintings of fruits and vegetables by Bartolomeo Bimbi. Finally, the last part illustrates the importance that herbaria play today in modern scientific research, drawing attention to the fact that they are an archive that holds taxonomical, chorological and ecological information in function of the plants they contain, as well as historical-biographical information on the scholars who, through their efforts, built up the collections.

This edition contains the English translation and the original text in Italian. "The Prince" (Italian: "Il Principe") is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. From correspondence a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, "De Principatibus" ("About Principalities"). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. This was done with the permission of the Medici pope Clement VII, but "long before then, in fact since the first appearance of the 'Prince' in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings". Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the "mirrors for princes" style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative. This is only partly because it was written in the vernacular Italian rather than Latin, a practice which had become increasingly popular since the publication of Dante's "Divine Comedy" and other works of Renaissance literature. "The Prince" is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. It also helped make "Old Nick" an English term for the devil, and even contributed to the modern negative connotations of the words "politics" and "politician" in western countries. In terms of subject matter it overlaps with the much longer "Discourses on Livy", which was written a few years later. In its use of near-contemporary Italians as examples of people who perpetrated criminal deeds for politics, another lesser-known work by Machiavelli which "The Prince" has been compared to is the "Life of Castruccio Castracani". "Il Principe" (titolo originale in lingua latina: "De Principatibus", lett. "Sui Principati") è un trattato di dottrina politica scritto da Niccolò Machiavelli nel 1513, nel quale espone le caratteristiche dei principati e dei metodi per mantenerli e conquistarli. Si tratta senza dubbio della sua opera più nota e celebrata, quella dalle cui massime (spesso superficialmente interpretate) sono nati il sostantivo "machiavellismo" e l'aggettivo "machiavellico". L'opera non è ascrivibile ad alcun genere letterario particolare, in quanto non ha le caratteristiche di un vero e proprio trattato; se ne è ipotizzata la natura di libriccino a carattere divulgativo. This volume proposes a rich corpus of papers about the 'Other City', a subject only few times dealt with, but worthy of all our attention: it imposes itself on the scene of international modern and contemporary historiography for its undeniable topicality. Throughout history, the city has always had to deal with social 'otherness', i.e. with class privileges and, consequently, with discrimination and marginalization of minorities, of the less well-off, of foreigners, in short, with the differences in status, culture, religion. So that the urban fabric has ended up structuring itself also in function of those inequalities, as well as of the strategic places for the exercise of power, of the political, military or social control, of the spaces for imprisonment, for the sanitary isolation or for the 'temporary' remedy to the catastrophes. From the first portraits of cities, made and diffused at the beginning of the fifteenth century for political exaltation purposes or for religious propaganda and for devotional purposes, which often, through increasingly refined graphic techniques, distort or even deny the true urban image, we reach, at the dawn of contemporary history, the new meaning given by scientific topography and new methods of representation; these latter aimed at revealing the structure and the urban landscape in their objectivity, often unexpected for who had known the city through the filter of 'regime' iconography. The representation of the urban image still shows the contradictions of a community that sometimes includes and even exalts the diversities, other times rejects them, showing the unease of a difficult integration.
