Renewable raw materials are becoming increasingly important as an alternative resource base in industrial networks. Consequently, research for methods improving the efficient use of renewable resources in production processes with by-products is crucial. The aim is cascade utilization, thus the multiple utilization of a raw material before its conversion into energy. The International Conference on Resource Efficiency in Interorganizational Networks (ResEff) brings together interdisciplinary researchers developing strategies and solution concepts for efficient resource utilization. It is therefore a platform for scientific exchange both between experts as well as interdisciplinary groups from agricultural and forestry science, mathematical optimization, operations research, marketing, business informatics, production and logistics. The following facets of the challenging topic of resource efficiency in interorganizational networks are covered: Materials, technologies, planning of production and value-added networks for renewable resources as well as governance, coordination and sale of products from renewable resources.

Social And Environmental Dimensions Of Organizations And Supply Chains written by Marcus Brandenburg and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-13 with Business & Economics categories.

This book focuses on environmental and social factors in international supply chains and industry networks. It explores whether socially-responsible and environmentally-conscious operations are complementary or conflictive to economic targets. The book elaborates on innovative approaches to manage the economic, ecological and social performance in supply networks from different perspectives. In addition, it links sustainability to operational processes and illustrates specific application contexts. Moreover, it covers the social dimension of sustainability. The rise of sustainability in management forces enterprises to revisit the concept of profitability that drives their operations. Social standards and ecological targets represent critical factors that challenge industry networks. The interplay of these goals requires new insights from scientific research and managerial practice. New approaches and systems are needed to minimize environmental and social harms and to promote sustainability.

Waste Wood and wood by-products have the potential to become attractive alternative sources of raw materials. Their efficient use is important due to the rising demand and limited supply of forest wood. Cascade utilization is gaining interest as a strategy to bridge the gap between rising wood demand and fresh wood availability. However, the economic and environmental impacts of a cascading system for wood-based products are not fully known. In this work, an investigation is conducted to determine the consequences of cascade utilization for the economic and environmental performance of logistics networks for wood flows. Two case studies in Lower Saxony consider five wood products, including medium density fiber (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB), particleboard, coated paper, and wood pellets. In the first case study, an approach for decision support is developed that consists of a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. In the first case study, the MILP model is used for minimizing the costs of the logistics network for three scenarios. Then the UMBERTO software is applied to determine the quantity of CO2e of the minimized logistics network. In the second case study, the MILP model is enhanced using two objective functions, as cost and global warming potential (GWP) are considered simultaneously. In this case study, it is observed that environmental parameters such as CO2 emissions can also be implemented in the MILP. The utilization of a multi-objective optimization model brings new perspectives (the trade-off between two contradictory objective functions, for instance) in comparison to the first case study, in which CO2 is calculated as an off-line step after logistics costs are minimized.
