Everyone knew the story of Kastory Impan... the first Martian on earth, or did they?excerpt"If this account reaches the eyes of Martians and may seem to them rather boastful and impertinent, I give them this reason: I have written spaceship, this in answer to Markin Lavlo's book, ""Martian Superiority."" It is merely a gentle reminder that beyond the remarkable flight of the First Martian, we Tellurians can claim to be the pioneers of space. It must not be thought that we of earth in any way minimize the great and historical space flight of the Pioneer. Far from it. We are as quick in our homage to his dead body and everlasting spirit in the museum at the spot of landing as his fellow-Martians themselves. The foregoing has prepared the reader for the story of the arrival of Kastory Impan, the First Martian, or the Pioneer, whose name is held today in reverence by the peoples of two great worlds. There are numerous other accounts of the arrival, but none have gone back into the past to show the connection between scientific research in transmutation and interplanetary flight; a point. I think, directly connected to the first space flight and subsequent establishment of commercial relationship. It is true, that without the flight of Dr. Sven's ship, the Earth would still be as far ahead; the Martians would still have come, but that does not detract from the honor and glory forever associated with the names of Professor Wilhelm Riehm, the founder of the science of transmutation, and Dr. Jarl Svens, who developed it. I challenge Martia, the super race of Mars, to bring up a scientist to compare with either of these two: And I may add that quite by accident I came across the little sub-plot which goes with story of the arrival of the First Martian. I'm certain no one ever heard of Gregory Stewart before.

The First Martian is the story of Zephfram Spears. After first reaching the Moon in 1725, Spears believed it was possible to reach Mars with existing technology if a precise plan could be worked out. He felt the human race needed to expand off the Earth. If it didn't, eventual overpopulation of would assure humanities doom. In the years that followed Spears completed his plan and it turned out to be the small flame that set off a fire storm that eventually lead to the first Mars mission. At the same time there was another man who also felt humanity was doomed. Has plan to change humanity itself into something less independent and more collective. But, in order his plan to work his new human would have to start in a remote location where it had time to grow and procreate without outside interference and Mars would be the perfect place. Unknown to most people, when the first manned voyage to Mars took place in 1761 it would become a small battle ground and depending on the outcome, humanity would ether take its first step in becoming a multi-planet species or it would eventually be driven into extinction by a race only half human.

He crash-landed on Mars fifteen years ahead of any other Earth expedition. He was without communications, without supplies, and with nothing but the wreck of an experimental rocket for resources. What is more it was the planet Mars as astronomers know it really to be--not just a fictional fantasy background for glamorous adventure. It was barren, cold, more grimly inhospitable than the top of Mount Everest. And if it had inhabitants, they were conspicuous by their abnsence.

It's the third decade of the twenty-first century and man has finally landed on Mars. Air Force Pilot Lt. Col. Harold T. Kane has led an expedition to the red planet, but, as Martian Legacy opens, he is upside down in a rover trapped in a Martian crater, cursing himself for ruining this historic event. Harry manages to right the rover and carry on with his mission, and, eventually, he and his fellow crew member, Dr. Karen Hansen, collect enough samples and return to Earth. Once there, they first are carefully cleaned with the latest anti-microbial procedures, then hailed and feted as the heroes of the moment. They leave behind a second crew of two on Mars that continues the explorations, looking for extinct creatures, and, hopefully, an ancient civilization. But, what has Harry's Crew #1 brought back? In this engaging story of the near future, present day fears are examined and a contemporary doomsday scenario plays out with surprising results. The reader is expertly led down many scientific byways, while at the same time being drawn along by the appealing human story. Martian Legacy combines our best hopes and worst fears as they are played out together.

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
