Phantom Paintings gathers several series of paintings on aluminum panel produced over the last three years by the Swiss artist Urs Fischer (born 1973). From far away many of these paintings appear to be large-scale gestural abstractions, but on closer inspection the viewer detects total flatness--the abstract paint marks were actually photographed and silkscreened on top of images of personal spaces, creating an image of abstraction rather than the abstraction itself. This process allows a largeness of motion and an immediacy, as two representational systems clash. In other works, the abstractions obstruct images taken from vintage Hollywood publicity headshots as well as close-up photographs of the artist's own face. Finally, bold paintings on cutout aluminum panels push the limits of line, color and shape, transforming facial features into intersecting organic shapes that slide and mutate in a new form of landscape painting.

New York-based artist Urs Fischer (born 1973 in Zurich) has devised a surreal universe in which dust bunnies are magnified into landscapes and a lump of clay squeezed in the artist's fist becomes a towering monolith. In this catalogue for Fischer's solo exhibition at The Brant Foundation Art Study Center in Greenwich, Connecticut, a cast aluminum grave pierces the ceiling and the exhibition space becomes an excavation site. A gallery wallpapered with trompe l'oeil reproductions of collector Peter Brant's living room features artworks from his extensive private collection. Wax likenesses of Brant have been set alight and slowly melt away, dissolving into puddles. With these audacious formal investigations of scale and material, Fischer has produced an off-kilter installation that disconcerts and entrances.

The "Sirens" of Swiss artist Urs Fischer (born 1973) are female and male Hollywood film actors, whose stills and publicity shots the artist intercuts and collages with their own double images, other faces, or flowing natural shapes in large silkscreen paintings. Stressing the rich vocabulary of forms and colors, the artist labels them landscape paintings, and juxtaposes these works with a set of sculptures, small figures interacting with elements such as potatoes or a spoon in the second gallery of the twin exhibitions documented here. Grouped around a mirror pond framed by potted plants, these witty inventions in gesso react to another form of siren call. Urs Fischer (Switzerland, 1973) is one of the most active and influential contemporary artists of his generation. Exhibiting internationally since the late 90s, this is his first solo exhibition in Latin America. Coming to Mexico, Urs Fischer's goal is to offer a survey of his practice to date spanning more than 25 years of production, while presenting new work conceived for the show and a country whose culture is deeply rooted in the iconography of catholic faith that is richly represented in its arts. Urs Fischer has conceived an exhibition that is variously playful, ro-mantic and poetic, where the visitor can descend into the underworld and ascend upwards into his imagination.While the show presents old, recent, and never-before seen works, as a whole it acts as an installation specific to the Museo Jumex's distinctive building. Rather than following a chronologically order, Lovers treats the museum like a birthday cake with its different layers and flavor. Each floor offers the view-er its own specific experience that, like the book Alice in the Wonderland, allows for diverse physical and dimensions, as well as shifts from emotion to perception, or from detached gaze to sublime wonder.
