Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: USA, grade: A, Regent University School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship (Regent University School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship), language: English, abstract: In his acceptance speech delivered in Chicago's Grant Park, newly chosen President-elect Barack Hussein Obama threw down the gauntlet and declared, "A new dawn of American leadership is at hand" (DeFrank, 2008). Indeed, the unprecedented election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America was met with historically high expectations (Ruggeri, 2009). In his first 100 days in office, Obama attempted to fulfill those expectations. Ghattas (2009) wrote: "The breadth of issues he has tackled in this short time is unprecedented, prompting former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to write recently in the Washington Post that 'the possibility of comprehensive solutions is unprecedented'. There is no guarantee that any of it will lead to success over the next four years, but the new administration is aiming high." As the new president engaged a large breadth of issues, he had to exercise a broad range of leadership theories and exercises. This paper examines five of leadership models he demonstrated in his first 100 years in office.

Fred I. Greenstein has long been one of our keenest observers of the modern presidency. In The Presidential Difference, he provides a fascinating and instructive account of the presidential qualities that have served well and poorly in the Oval Office, beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt's first hundred days. He surveys each president's political skill, vision, cognitive style, organizational capacity, ability to communicate, and emotional intelligence--and argues that the last is the most important in predicting presidential success. Throughout, Greenstein offers a series of bottom-line judgments on each of his thirteen subjects as well as an overarching theory of why presidents succeed or fail. In this new edition, Greenstein assesses President George W. Bush in the wake of his two terms. The book also includes a new chapter on the leadership style of President Obama and how we can expect it to affect his presidency and legacy.

Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States in 2008. During his presidency, his leadership style was described at times as transformational, servant, charismatic, dysfunctional, extreme, and non-existent. Regardless of different perceptions, leaders must interact with many to accomplish goals and advance organizations. Leaders also interact with a small group of close advisors or confidants who lend guidance and support in return for increased loyalty and/or favoritism. This dynamic of interacting with a small group yet having to rely on the support of a larger group is critical to the leadership process and known as Leader–Member Exchange Theory (LMX). This case study examines President Obama’s use of LMX throughout his political career, especially during his years as President of the United States.

As President Obama's time in the White House draws to a close, this celebratory book documents his transformative accomplishments. Evidence indicates President Barack Obama has been tremendously successful and effective by objective measures. On economic indicators alone, he is credited with the longest streak of job growth in U.S. history, a two-thirds reduction in the federal budget deficit, and the rebounding of the stock market to record highs following the record lows of the recession under his predecessor. His victories have come against a backdrop of criticism and sometimes open defiance from conservatives, lack of cooperation in Congress, and racially tinged commentary in traditional and social media. Through it all, the President who campaigned on a slogan of 'Yes, We Can!' has persevered in his determination to make a difference and left an indelible mark on American politics and the world. LEGACY is a commemoration of his eight years in the White House.
