Surrounded by one of the largest petrochemical compounds in Argentina, a highly polluted river that brings the toxic waste of tanneries and other industries, a hazardous and largely unsupervised waste incinerator, and an unmonitored landfill, Flammable's soil, air, and water are contaminated with lead, chromium, benzene, and other chemicals. So are its nearly five thousand sickened and frail inhabitants. How do poor people make sense of and cope with toxic pollution? Why do they fail to understand what is objectively a clear and present danger? How are perceptions and misperceptions shared within a community? Based on archival research and two and a half years of collaborative ethnographic fieldwork in Flammable, this book examines the lived experiences of environmental suffering. Despite clear evidence to the contrary, residents allow themselves to doubt or even deny the hard facts of industrial pollution. This happens, the authors argue, through a "labor of confusion" enabled by state officials who frequently raise the issue of relocation and just as frequently suspend it; by the companies who fund local health care but assert that the area is unfit for human residence; by doctors who say the illnesses are no different from anywhere else but tell mothers they must leave the neighborhood if their families are to be cured; by journalists who randomly appear and focus on the most extreme aspects of life there; and by lawyers who encourage residents to hold out for a settlement. These contradictory actions, advice, and information work together to shape the confused experience of living in danger and ultimately translates into a long, ineffective, and uncertain waiting time, a time dictated by powerful interests and shared by all marginalized groups. With luminous and vivid descriptions of everyday life in the neighborhood, Auyero and Swistun depict this on-going slow motion human and environmental disaster and dissect the manifold ways in which it is experienced by Flammable residents.

In most cities today, fire has been reduced to a sporadic and isolated threat. But throughout history the constant risk of fire has left a deep and lasting imprint on almost every dimension of urban society. This volume, the first truly global study of urban conflagration, shows how fire has shaped cities throughout the modern world, from Europe to the imperial colonies, major trade entrepôts, and non-European capitals, right up to such present-day megacities as Lagos and Jakarta. Urban fire may hinder commerce or even spur it; it may break down or reinforce barriers of race, class, and ethnicity; it may serve as a pretext for state violence or provide an opportunity for displays of state benevolence. As this volume demonstrates, the many and varied attempts to master, marginalize, or manipulate fire can turn a natural and human hazard into a highly useful social and political tool.

Historically and persisting to this day, there has been a barbaric attitude toward gruesome and fatal injuries from flammable fabrics. Reliable burn injury data show hundreds of garment burn injury fatalities, annually and morbidly, painfully, and permanently injured victims form flammable fabrics. Industrial representatives argue that the total number of injuries is small and that the cost-benefits to the vast majority preponderantly favor the status quo. The children's sleepwear laws have dramatically reduced the frightful, destructive injuries to innocent children and safer fabrics are appearing in the stream of commerce. An effective warning label on dangerous garment fabrics would help build a market for safer clothing and enable the consumer to choose safer garments. More importantly, an effective warning label would reduce the number of dangerous flammable fabric victims. This text places an emphasis on the value of a warning label, which should be mandated on all new clothing to reduce the flammable fabric injuries and fatalities each year. It is especially important to alert mothers of flammable fabric risk to protect their children. Currently, the largest fatality groups are children 2-5 years of age and senior citizens over age 65. The author hopes to promote the use of an effective warning label to circumvent fabric burn injuries and to reduce disfiguring and fatal burn injuries.

This book provides comprehensive coverage of electrical system installation within areas where flammable gases and liquids are handled and processed. The accurate hazard evaluation of flammability risks associated with chemical and petrochemical locations is critical in determining the point at which the costs of electrical equipment and installation are balanced with explosion safety requirements. The book offers the most current code requirements along with tables and illustrations as analytic tools. Environmental characteristics are covered in Section 1 along with recommended electrical installation and safety recommendations. Section 2 treats a number of application illustrations in detail. Section 3 presents examples for the application of classifying NEC Class 1 locations.

Sources of Ignition: Flammability Characteristics of Chemicals and Products describes the flammability characteristics of substances and deals with the different sources of ignition. Case histories are presented for review and analysis. The book is comprised of six chapters and seven appendices. The introduction gives a basic description of the anatomy of fire and explosions, including the access to fuel and the interaction of oxygen and fuel. A description of the flammable limits of gases, dusts, mists, and mixtures and the method of estimating these follow. The text also explains the flash point of a substance and the method of calculating it, using citations from Fuji and Hermann. The ignition energy of a chemical, as well as how to estimate it using the method of Calcote et al., is also presented. The book explains that autoignition temperature of gases is dependent on different factors, such as time delay, oxygen concentration, and catalyst effects of materials, but may still be estimated citing Zabetakis, 1965 as reference. The formula is given in more detail. Finally, the energy sources for ignition are enumerated as mechanical, electrical, thermal, and chemical. The appendices deal with chemicals, self-heating substances, organic peroxides, substances prone to spontaneous combustions, unstable substances, flammability characteristics of dusts, and a checklist of possible sources of ignition. This book is beneficial to fire safety engineers, firemen, fire prevention maintenance administrators, fire hazard officers, and other personnel whose line of work is in fire safety and prevention.

As recognition of the urgency of the flammable fabrics problem, the Flammable Fabrics Act of 1953 was amended in 1967 to include all items of wearing apparel and interior furnishings. In order to facilitate research and assist in the development of new standards and test methods in these areas, a series of bibliographies is being prepared by the NBS Office of Flammable Fabrics. The first three bibliographies, on wearing apparel, fabrics used on beds, and carpets and rugs, are published in NBS Technical Note 498.498-1 is on interior furnishings. It includes all of the references on bed fabrics and carpets and rugs that appeared in TN 498, along with those on upholstered furniture, draperies, curtains, and materials that are used in interior furnishings. 498-2 relates to test methods and testing of fabrics and products made from fabrics and related materials. It cuts across product lines and covers all of the products within the ranges defined in the 1967 amendment to the Flammable Fabrics Act. Approximately 300 citations are included.
