This book examines food in the United States in the age of the Internet. One major theme running through the book is business opportunities and failures, as well as the harms to consumers and traditional brick-and-mortar companies that occurred as entrepreneurs tried to take advantage of the Internet to create online companies related to food. The other major theme is the concept of trust online and different models used by different companies to make their web presence seem trustworthy. The book describes a number of major food companies, including AllRecipes, Betty Crocker, Cook's Illustrated, Epicurious, Groupon, OpenTable, and Yelp. The book draws on business history, food studies, and information studies for its approach.

Statistics indicate that one–third of a billion people are now regular users of the Internet, and the amount of information on the World Wide Web doubles every 3 months, confirming the significance of the Internet as an information source, and the importance of a means of navigating this vast resource to best effect. An increasing number of people working in all areas of industry are aware of the importance of the Internet, but may not be sure of what is available, or the value of the information on the Web. Many have no idea where to begin, and those that have ventured onto the World Wide Web become aware of the amount of time that can be wasted in searching for the right information. The Guide is in its fourth edition, the first being produced in 1997, and has undergone several revisions, with the number of URLs included rising to over 1,750, and the addition of four new sections in this new edition, covering analytical laboratories for the food industry, consumer associations, environmental information, and functional foods. Many of the sites listed have links to similar sites of interest, effectively increasing further the 1,750 sites listed. The Guide contains a brief introduction to terminology and search engines, and is divided alphabetically into a list of subject categories. Within each category, there are descriptions of the contents of the major sites relating to the subject, followed be a select listing of other relevant sites with their URLs. There is also the benefit of password–protected access to all the Web sites listed on the Leatherhead Food RA Web site for purchasers of the Guide, eliminating the time–consuming process of entering URLs; the sites listed in the Guide can be accessed directly from the listings on Leatherhead′s Web site.

Tools, interfaces, methods, and practices that can help bring about a healthy, socially inclusive, and sustainable food future. Our contemporary concerns about food range from food security to agricultural sustainability to getting dinner on the table for family and friends. This book investigates food issues as they intersect with participatory Internet culture—blogs, wikis, online photo- and video-sharing platforms, and social networks—in efforts to bring about a healthy, socially inclusive, and sustainable food future. Focusing on our urban environments provisioned with digital and network capacities, and drawing on such “bottom-up” sociotechnical trends as DIY and open source, the chapters describe engagements with food and technology that engender (re-)creative interactions. In the first section, “Eat,” contributors discuss technology-aided approaches to sustainable dining, including digital communication between farmers and urban consumers and a “telematic” dinner party at which guests are present electronically. The chapters in “Cook” describe, among other things, “smart” chopping boards that encourage mindful eating and a website that supports urban wild fruit foraging. Finally, “Grow” connects human-computer interaction with achieving a secure, safe, and ethical food supply, offering chapters on the use of interactive technologies in urban agriculture, efforts to trace the provenance of food with a “Fair Tracing” tool, and other projects. Contributors Joon Sang Baek, Pollie Barden, Eric P. S. Baumer, Eli Blevis, Nick Bryan-Kinns, Robert Comber, Jean Duruz, Katharina Frosch, Anne Galloway, Geri Gay, Jordan Geiger, Gijs Geleijnse, Nina Gros, Penny Hagen, Megan Halpern, Greg Hearn, Tad Hirsch, Jettie Hoonhout, Denise Kera, Vera Khovanskaya, Ann Light, Bernt Meerbeek, William Odom, Kenton O'Hara, Charles Spence, Mirjam Struppek, Esther Toet, Marc Tuters, Katharine S. Food And Social Media written by Signe Rousseau and has been published by Rowman Altamira this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Cooking categories.

Social media platforms have quickly become integral to most people's lives, both privately and professionally. This is the first book to illuminate the trend of relying on social media in the food world. Engaging in social media is fun, but it is also rapidly becoming the platform for self-promotion and branding. This entertaining narrative offers an historical account of the major changes brought about by the Internet and also explores the polarities that underlie the challenges of adaptation, including exclusivity versus democracy, professionalism versus amateurism, and business versus pleasure. Loaded with insight into the current scene, it discusses controversies such as celebrity chefs' tweeting wars, ethics and the accusations of plagiarizing of recipes, and etiquette concerning the practice of photographing a meal to blog about it. Food and Social Media will appeal to anyone with an interest in food and media as well as those who enjoy using any of the social media formats, including blogs, Yelp, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and more, to participate in a digital food community.
