Abstract: More than 9,093 individuals (low-income as classified by participation in the Food Stamp Program (FSP)) participated in a 1 day food and nutrient intake survey (Nov 79-Mar 80) covering the 48 conterminous states. This adjunct to an earlier study (Nov 77-Mar 78) of similar households reports average food intakes of total respondents, based on 22 sex-age groups, 10 major food groups and 43 subgroups. A percentage of individuals eating food from each food group, the contributions of each food group to food energy, and 14 nutrients are presented. Results are summarized based on data presented in 120 tables which profile FSP participants compared to non-participants. Intakes of FSP participants and non-participants differed for several food groups. FSP participants reported eating more pork, poultry, frankfurters, sausages, and luncheon meats; cereals and pastas; dark-green vegetables; and soft drinks and fruit drinksbc).

Abstract: A survey of 4400 low-income households eligible for food stamps was conducted in 1977-78 to study certain population subgroups; dietary intake levels were evaluated and the impact of food programs on nutritional status was assessed. Data were obtained on kind, form, quantity, and cost of foods used at home for a 7-day period. Demographic information included household size, use of food stamps, age of household head, tenancy, ethnic background, food shopping habits, and educational attainment. Some of the findings were that the food stamp program recipients (38%) were located in urban areas of the south or northeast, were likely to be female-headed households, and were not elderly. The average household used $48 worth of food per week for 3.3 members. Households receiving food stamps had slightly higher food money values and nutrient intakes per member than did non-recipient households. Food use of the average household was sufficient to meet RDAs for energy and 11 nutrients. (cj).

Abstract: Three day food intake data and the characteristics of a national US sampling of about 36,100 people (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) are presented in 510 tables. Data was collected between April 1977 and March 1978. Food intakes are summarized under 10 food groups and 43 subgroups, covering all people sampled in each of 22 age and sex categories at 4 income levels, 3 urban categories, and 2 racial groups; data also are broken down by the 4 seasons. Major findings of the survey included: over 90% of the subjects ate at least 1 food from each of 5 major food groups during the 3-day survey. Under the meat group, beef (68%) and meat mixtures (67%) were reported by more people than poultry (43%) or fish (25%). About 80% of all subjects had milk at least once. Bread, rolls, or biscuits (95%), white potatoes (about 80%), and non-citrus fruits and juices (58%) were the most popular items consumed in the grain, vegetable, and fruit food groups, respectively. Findings for other food categories (and subcategories), and the influences found from factors of income, urbanization, race, and seasonal differences are highlighted. (wz)
