Food consumption patterns and practices are rapidly changing in Asia and the Pacific, and nowhere are these changes more striking than in urban areas. This book brings together scholars from anthropology, sociology, environmental studies, tourism, architecture and development studies to provide a comprehensive examination of food consumption trends in the cities of Asia and the Pacific, including household food consumption, eating out and food waste. The chapters cover different scales of analysis, from household research to national data, and combine different methodologies and approaches, from quantifiable data that show how much people consume to qualitative findings that reveal how and why consumption takes place in urban settings. Abstract: The 1977 Food and Agriculture Act designated the Department of Agriculture as the lead agency for the conduct of human nutrition research. It specifies five priority areas for basic and applied research and nutrition education research : (1) human nutrition requirements; (2) composition of foods and the effects of agricultural practices, handling, processing and cooking on nutrients; (3) surveillance of nutritional benefits to participate in USDA programs; (4) factors affecting consumer food preferences and eating habits and (5) development of techniques and equipment to assist consumers in selecting food to provide a nutritionally balanced diet. The comprehensive plan for delivery of human nutrition research and services is a plan with a basic statement of purpose and priorities which describes current programs for meeting the priorities and concludes with a discussion of future goals and implementation plans.

With over half the world's population now deemed to be urbanised, cities are assuming a larger role in political debates about the security and sustainability of the global food system. Hence, planning for sustainable food production and consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue for planners, policymakers, designers, farmers, suppliers, activists, business and scientists alike. The rapid growth of the food planning movement owes much to the fact that food, because of its unique, multi-functional character, helps to bring people together from all walks of life. In the wider contexts of global climate change, resource depletion, a burgeoning world population, competing food production systems and diet-related public health concerns, new paradigms for urban and regional planning capable of supporting sustainable and equitable food systems are urgently needed. This book addresses this urgent need. By working at a range of scales and with a variety of practical and theoretical models, this book reviews and elaborates definitions of sustainable food systems, and begins to define ways of achieving them. To this end 4 different themes have been defined as entry-points into the discussion of 'sustainable food planning'. These are (1) urban agriculture, (2) integrating health, environment and society, (3) food in urban design and planning and (4) urban food governance.
