The human figure is one of the earliest topics drawn by the young child and remains popular throughout childhood and into adolescence. When it first emerges, however, the human figure in the child's drawing is very bizarre: it appears to have no torso and its arms, if indeed it has any, are attached to its head. Even when the figure begins to look more conventional the child must still contend with a variety of problems: for instance, how to draw the head and body in the right proportions and how to draw the figure in action. In this book, Maureen Cox traces the development of the human form in children's drawings; she reviews the literature in the field, criticises a number of major theories which purport to explain the developing child's drawing skills and also presents new data.

"Mortensen...uses drawings of the human figure as a means to assess the psychological and intellectual development of children...relating the different aspects of figure drawing to different theoretical frames of reference, which include developmental psychology as well as the Kleinian theory of psychosexual development." —British Journal of Psychiatry This work details sex differences in children's drawings and shows how they display a coherent and meaningful pattern, indicative of a fundamental and basic psychosexual identity and not merely of socialization and education. Mortenson also reveals how human figure drawings reflect the drawer's visual impression of others, and the subjective experience of being human.

Excerpt from Figure Drawing for Children: Papers of Special Value to All Interested in the Development of Art Among the Children The directions given here will be of small value unless they lead the student to look for what lies in and behind the various forms, and cultivate in him an appreciation of the beauties and meanings of these forms. These rules should also help in giving expression through these child-forms to any idea that can be conveyed by them. In Short, rules must be kept only as tools. In beginning the study of particular forms such as are found in the human figure, there is a guide which will lead to the best results, and that guide we have in Proportion. The study of Human figure has intrigued me all throughout my life and my artistic journey. It is also one of the major subjects that has been studied since ages by great masters and they devoted their effort and time to simplify the human figure drawing process. The artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci's human sculptures and their paintings of human figures continues to have significant reference for modern era artists including me.The content of this book is a result of my experience in learning the figure drawing and I have used that information to simplify the figure drawing during my artistic journey. I have gotten opportunity to discuss with the various figure drawing artists and to attend live figure drawing session in the US. It helped me how to simplify the entire process and to understand the underlying concepts of figure drawing. Also, my interest in learning the human anatomy facilitated this book. This book is an attempt to help emerging artists to learn and practice figurative art. Each topic in this book consists of basic concepts like common equipment used in art to Gesture drawing. There are also transparent images included throughout the book which will help the artists to practice while learning. All the practice and reference images are originally drawn by me and I hope this book will guide the artists to take the next step in figurative art.
