Feedback collected by InHerSight from more than 150,000 female professionals across 28,000 organizations found that, as of February, employees ranked their satisfaction with mentorship programs dead last on a list of 14 fixed metrics (including things like salary and management opportunities). "Formal mentoring has never been more important to organizations and employees as in the 21st century. With the demands on organizations to downsize, compete globally, and be competitive in an uncertain environment, 71% of the Fortune 500 companies have established formal mentoring programs (Bridgeford, 2007) to develop potential talent, share the organizations beliefs, develop the employee's self-confidence, assist employees in transitioning to new positions, enhancing employee careers, and increasing job satisfaction. However, research on formal mentoring programs has been limited and the benefits are perceived to be less effective than informal mentoring. Since organizations are utilizing formal mentoring as a tool to develop and retain talented employees, more research is needed on this topic. This study furthers the study of formal mentoring by examining a key issue, which is getting the formal relationship started. The study identifies demographic and organizational level characteristics that may affect a protégé's willingness to contact their formal mentor. Results indicate that females are more likely to initiate contact with their formal mentors than male protégés, that protégés in the lower levels of the organization are less likely to initiate contact with their mentor, and contrary to the study's prediction, protégés are more likely to initiate contact with formal mentors who are in lower levels of the organization. The study found mixed support for the likelihood that protégés would initiate contact with their formal mentors when their mentor is of the same gender. Also, the study did not find support for protégés from the majority group being more likely to initiate contact. Implications and directions for future research on formal mentoring are also discussed"--Abstract.
