Desde las primeras décadas del siglo XX la fotografía ha sido un aliado esencial de la arquitectura, para su desarrollo, su enseñanza y su aprendizaje. En los últimos años, las dinámicas entre ambas disciplinas sólo han hecho que aumentar gracias a la aparición de nuevas prácticas que plantean desafíos tanto al hacer del arquitecto como al del fotógrafo. Con este libro se pretende contribuir al avance en la comprensión de los modos de mirar de uno y otro y de sus mutuas repercusiones. El volumen reúne contribuciones realizadas desde España, México, Chile, Ecuador, Brasil y Venezuela suscitadas a partir del Seminario Internacional sobre Arquitectura Moderna y Fotografía celebrado en Barcelona los días 9 y 10 de abril de 2015. En América Latina, como en el resto del mundo, los fotógrafos jugaron un doble papel: registraron el patrimonio arquitectónico y contribuyeron decisivamente a construir el universo visual de referencia de los arquitectos. Los documentos compilados desde Barcelona abren perspectivas sobre el inexplorado panorama del registro visual de la arquitectura moderna en América Latina.

"Un repaso a la arquitectura moderna y contemporánea de España. Este trabajo se centra en el análisis de lo producido en arquitectura en los últimos cien años en España, intentando trazar lazos formales, ideológicos y temporales entre ellos. El objetivo de este planteamiento es relacionar el desarrollo de un país con las formas que produce, el modo en el que estas entran en tensión con unas ideas y, finalmente, el modo en el que este análisis nos ayuda a cartografiar los límites de lo posible (y lo pensable) en un lugar determinado. Paralelamente a estos objetivos el trabajo intenta probar modos paralelos de explicar arquitectura a parte de la fotografía y el texto, mediante la acción, la escultura o el dibujo. David Bestué repasa la historia de la arquitectura española, definiendo sus distintas etapas y su desarrollo lineal. Sigue, sin embargo, un recorrido muy poco ortodoxo, recuperando ideas olvidadas y revisando algunos tópicos que se repiten incansablemente en los manuales didácticos. Con esta lectura fresca y personal busca entender como se han ido dibujando los paisajes que actualmente nos rodean. David Bestué recupera en este libro un formato totalmente desacreditado en la actualidad, el de las "Historias Nacionales de Arquitectura". Su texto imita el tono didáctico de esta literatura, con sus etapas bien definidas y su desarrollo lineal. Sin embargo, usa este lenguaje de forma irónica al subvertir los lugares comunes de la historiografía, creando un recorrido poco ortodoxo, recuperando ideas olvidadas y revisando algunos tópicos que se repiten incansablemente en los manuales.
