This book provides an introduction to discrete harmonic analysis (DHA) with a view towards applications to digital signal processing. In a nutshell, DHA is used to determine the time-frequency structure of a digitized signal, providing a representation of the signal as a sum of spectral components that can then be analyzed. The main methods of DHA are discrete Fourier transform and other discrete orthogonal transforms such as the Walsh and Haar transforms. Fast algorithms are used to process signals in real time, while additional options are provided by spline harmonic analysis. These topics are carefully covered in the book. With only modest prerequisites, some of which are recalled at the beginning, a profound mathematical theory is built almost from scratch. The 150 exercises included form an integral part of the text. Based decades of teaching experience, this book provides a basis for lecture courses starting at the upper undergraduate level, and will also prove a valuable resource for mathematicians and engineers interested in digital signal processing.

Representation Discovery Using Harmonic Analysis written by Sridhar Mahadevan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-31 with Computers categories.

Representations are at the heart of artificial intelligence (AI). This book is devoted to the problem of representation discovery: how can an intelligent system construct representations from its experience? Representation discovery re-parameterizes the state space - prior to the application of information retrieval, machine learning, or optimization techniques - facilitating later inference processes by constructing new task-specific bases adapted to the state space geometry. This book presents a general approach to representation discovery using the framework of harmonic analysis, in particular Fourier and wavelet analysis. Biometric compression methods, the compact disc, the computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner in medicine, JPEG compression, and spectral analysis of time-series data are among the many applications of classical Fourier and wavelet analysis. A central goal of this book is to show that these analytical tools can be generalized from their usual setting in (infinite-dimensional) Euclidean spaces to discrete (finite-dimensional) spaces typically studied in many subfields of AI. Generalizing harmonic analysis to discrete spaces poses many challenges: a discrete representation of the space must be adaptively acquired; basis functions are not pre-defined, but rather must be constructed. Algorithms for efficiently computing and representing bases require dealing with the curse of dimensionality. However, the benefits can outweigh the costs, since the extracted basis functions outperform parametric bases as they often reflect the irregular shape of a particular state space. Case studies from computer graphics, information retrieval, machine learning, and state space planning are used to illustrate the benefits of the proposed framework, and the challenges that remain to be addressed. Representation discovery is an actively developing field, and the author hopes this book will encourage other researchers to explore this exciting area of research. This contributed volume collects papers based on courses and talks given at the 2017 CIMPA school Harmonic Analysis, Geometric Measure Theory and Applications, which took place at the University of Buenos Aires in August 2017. These articles highlight recent breakthroughs in both harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory, particularly focusing on their impact on image and signal processing. The wide range of expertise present in these articles will help readers contextualize how these breakthroughs have been instrumental in resolving deep theoretical problems. Some topics covered include: Gabor frames Falconer distance problem Hausdorff dimension Sparse inequalities Fractional Brownian motion Fourier analysis in geometric measure theory This volume is ideal for applied and pure mathematicians interested in the areas of image and signal processing. Electrical engineers and statisticians studying these fields will also find this to be a valuable resource.

Mathematical Imaging is currently a rapidly growing field in applied mathematics, with an increasing need for theoretical mathematics. This book, the second of two volumes, emphasizes the role of mathematics as a rigorous basis for imaging sciences. It provides a comprehensive and convenient overview of the key mathematical concepts, notions, tools and frameworks involved in the various fields of gray-tone and binary image processing and analysis, by proposing a large, but coherent, set of symbols and notations, a complete list of subjects and a detailed bibliography. It establishes a bridge between the pure and applied mathematical disciplines, and the processing and analysis of gray-tone and binary images. It is accessible to readers who have neither extensive mathematical training, nor peer knowledge in Image Processing and Analysis. It is a self-contained book focusing on the mathematical notions, concepts, operations, structures, and frameworks that are beyond or involved in Image Processing and Analysis. The notations are simplified as far as possible in order to be more explicative and consistent throughout the book and the mathematical aspects are systematically discussed in the image processing and analysis context, through practical examples or concrete illustrations. Conversely, the discussed applicative issues allow the role of mathematics to be highlighted. Written for a broad audience – students, mathematicians, image processing and analysis specialists, as well as other scientists and practitioners – the author hopes that readers will find their own way of using the book, thus providing a mathematical companion that can help mathematicians become more familiar with image processing and analysis, and likewise, image processing and image analysis scientists, researchers and engineers gain a deeper understanding of mathematical notions and concepts.

Fourier Analysis is an important area of mathematics, especially in light of its importance in physics, chemistry, and engineering. Yet it seems that this subject is rarely offered to undergraduates. This book introduces Fourier Analysis in its three most classical settings: The Discrete Fourier Transform for periodic sequences, Fourier Series for periodic functions, and the Fourier Transform for functions on the real line. The presentation is accessible for students with just three or four terms of calculus, but the book is also intended to be suitable for a junior-senior course, for a capstone undergraduate course, or for beginning graduate students. Material needed from real analysis is quoted without proof, and issues of Lebesgue measure theory are treated rather informally. Included are a number of applications of Fourier Series, and Fourier Analysis in higher dimensions is briefly sketched. A student may eventually want to move on to Fourier Analysis discussed in a more advanced way, either by way of more general orthogonal systems, or in the language of Banach spaces, or of locally compact commutative groups, but the experience of the classical setting provides a mental image of what is going on in an abstract setting.

Twentieth Century Harmonic Analysis written by J.S. Byrnes and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

Almost a century ago, harmonic analysis entered a (still continuing) Golden Age, with the emergence of many great masters throughout Europe. They created a wealth of profound analytic methods, to be successfully exploited and further developed by succeeding generations. This flourishing of harmonic analysis is today as lively as ever, as the papers presented here demonstrate. In addition to its own ongoing internal development and its basic role in other areas of mathematics, physics and chemistry, financial analysis, medicine, and biological signal processing, harmonic analysis has made fundamental contributions to essentially all twentieth century technology-based human endeavours, including telephone, radio, television, radar, sonar, satellite communications, medical imaging, the Internet, and multimedia. This ubiquitous nature of the subject is amply illustrated. The book not only promotes the infusion of new mathematical tools into applied harmonic analysis, but also to fuel the development of applied mathematics by providing opportunities for young engineers, mathematicians and other scientists to learn more about problem areas in today's technology that might benefit from new mathematical insights.
