Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848 In all beings God has proportioned this period of growth to the length of existence which he destines to them. Man, who is to live for a century, grows for five and twenty years, or even longer. Nations, which are to live through two or three thousand years, have revolutions of_development - of childhood, youth, manhood, and at length old age, which last not less than two or three centuries. The difficulty with the vulgar is, amid those convulsive phenomena whlch mark the revolutions of a nation, to distinguish the crises of growth from those of decay, youth from old age, and life from death. Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Excerpt from The French Revolution and Napoleon NO historian believes that history repeats itself. Yet, between different ages there are frequently striking analogies and resemblances. It is prob lems that repeat themselves, not the conditions which determine their solution. One of these problems, recurrent in European annals, is that of the maintenance of a certain balance of power among the various nations as essential to their freedom, the maintenance of a situation to which they are accustomed and which-they have found tolerable, a change in which would be prejudicial or dangerous to their peace and safety. Several times in modern history this balance has been threatened and Europe has purchased immunity from servitude by freely giving its life blood that life might remain and might be worth living. Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 3 Grezt was the joy at the Jacobins. Its members congratulated themselves on the energy of the people, on their late admirable conduct, and on the removal of all those obstacles which the right side had not ceased to oppose to the progress of the Revolution. According to the custom after all great events, they agreed upon the manner in which the last insurrection should be represented. The people, said Robespierre, have confounded all their calumniators by their conduct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Narrative of the French Revolution of 1848 And never was so much work done, and well done, in so brief a space of time. The Three Days Of July, glorious as they were to the great-hearted victors, resulted in nothing more than a transposition of the established order of things; they shifted the parts in the political drama from one set of actors to another, but the play remained the same. The Three Days of February were days both of destruction and creation, and produced a fundamental change in the whole political and social system of the country. Between the ancient France Of Louis Philippe and the new-born Republic there lies the interval of a deluge. Excerpt from The French Revolution a Short History The object of this book is similar to that with which, a few years ago, I wrote a short biography of Napoleon. The main outlines of the Revolution, the proportion and relation of things, tend to become obscured under the accumulation of historical detail that is now proceeding. This is an attempt, therefore, to disentangle from the mass of details the shape, the movement, the significance of this great historical cataclysm. To keep the outline clear I have deliberately avoided mentioning the names of many subordinate actors; thinking that if nothing essential was connected with them the mention of their names would only tend to confuse matters. Similarly with incidents, I have omitted a few, such as the troubles at Avignon, and changed the emphasis on others, judging freely their importance and not following the footsteps of my predecessors, as in the case of the capture of the Bastille, the importance of which was vastly exaggerated by early writers on the subject.
