Eine tiefgreifende Veränderung in der Qualität des besonderen Verhältnisses hat sie jedoch nicht bewirkt.

Die Autorin behandelt die Frage, ob sich Deutschlandbilder in Frankreich in Folge der deutschen Wiedervereinigung von 1990 nachhaltig geändert haben oder ob man eher von einer Kontinuität der Deutschlandbilder sprechen sollte. Cary von Buttlar behandelt dafür die Epoche von den ersten Flüchtlingswellen im Sommer 1989 noch vor Öffnung der Mauer bis zu den ersten gesamtdeutschen Wahlen zum Deutschen Bundestag 1994. Sie untersucht vier überregionale Tageszeitungen, die für unterschiedliche politische Richtungen der politischen Landschaft Frankreichs repräsentativ sind.Die Auswertung der Pressekommentare erweist, dass die Wiedervereinigung von 1990 das positive Deutschlandbild, das sich vor allem seit den 1960er Jahren herausgebildet und danach beständig verfestigt hatte, in der veröffentlichten Meinung Frankreichs zwar für kurze Zeit relativierte und überdeckte, auf Dauer aber nicht verdrängte oder gar zerstörte. Wenngleich der Fall der Mauer auch Assoziationen weckte, die an die Erfahrungen zwischen 1871 und 1945 anknüpften, kehrte die Wiedervereinigung das im Ganzen positive Deutschlandbild der Nachkriegszeit nicht um. In diesem Sinne modifiziert die Verfasserin die verbreitete These, dass zwar die französische Bevölkerung die Einheit akzeptiert, aber die französischen Intellektuellen sie abgelehnt hätten, denn diese Ansicht trifft allenfalls auf das kommunistische Milieu zu. Richtig ist, dass die Motive der Akzeptanz unterschiedlich waren und zwischen ehrlicher Zustimmung und resignierter Hinnahme vielfältige Schattierungen erkennbar wurden.

Debates on the role of Christian Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe too often remain strongly tied to national historiographies. With the edited collection the contributing authors aim to reconstruct Christian Democracy’s role in the fall of Communism from a bird's-eye perspective by covering the entire region and by taking “third-way” options in the broader political imaginary of late-Cold War Europe into account. The book’s twelve chapters present the most recent insights on this topic and connect scholarship on the Iron Curtain’s collapse with scholarship on political Catholicism. Christian Democracy and the Fall of Communism offers the reader a two-fold perspective. The first approach examines the efforts undertaken by Western European actors who wanted to foster or support Christian Democratic initiatives in Central and Eastern Europe. The second approach is devoted to the (re-)emergence of homegrown Christian Democratic formations in the 1980s and 1990s. This volume examines mechanisms for regional peacemaking and conflict management in Europe and the Middle East. To date little research has been devoted to uncovering the conditions for peace, and the factors that contribute to stabilizing the state of peace. This volume assesses the factors that contribute to regional pacification, the incentives that motivate states in establishing peaceful relations, and most importantly, how regions become peaceful. It discusses the conditions under which various types of ‘peace’ might emerge on a regional level and the factors most likely to determine the outcome. The book takes an innovative approach through a systematic comparison of two regions that are particularly prominent and important for the subject of regional pacification: Europe and the Middle East. While many believe that the European case is the indispensable model for peacemaking, others believe that these two regions are too different for Europe to be a useful framework for the Middle East. This volume occupies a middle ground between these two extreme positions. It argues that while a mindless copying of European models will not lead to peace in the Middle East, important insights can be gained from the most successful case of regional peacemaking to date. “The West” is a central idea in German public discourse, yet historians know surprisingly little about the evolution of the concept. Contrary to common assumptions, this volume argues that the German concept of the West was not born in the twentieth century, but can be traced from a much earlier time. In the nineteenth century, “the West” became associated with notions of progress, liberty, civilization, and modernity. It signified the future through the opposition to antonyms such as “Russia” and “the East,” and was deployed as a tool for forging German identities. Examining the shifting meanings, political uses, and transnational circulations of the idea of “the West” sheds new light on German intellectual history from the post-Napoleonic era to the Cold War.
