Out of control sexual behavior ñ referred to variously as "sex addiction", "sexual compulsivity", and "hypersexuality", among other terms, has been a controversial and attention-getting issue since it first captured both public and professional attention over 30 years ago. Previous discussions of this behavior have been grounded in conceptualizing it as a pathologized, medical issue on par with substance abuse addictions, or, in backlash, as simply irresponsible behavior indicating weakness in the individual. In keeping with the call from many leaders in the mental health and sexual health areas to move beyond these two polarized conceptualizations of these sexual behavior problems, the authors present a model for working with clients in both group and individual treatment settings. Based on their experience with hundreds of clients, this book provides a comprehensive and practical conceptualization of out of control sexual behavior framed as a sexual health problem within a larger model of human behavior, not a psychiatric or addictive disorder. The book includes step-by-step tools for assessment, treatment planning as well as treatment implementation. It describes a process for professionals to guide clients to define and be accountable for their own personal vision of sexual health as the foundation on which they regain sexual behavior control. The authors provide rich and varied composite case examples based on 20 years of clinical experience that demonstrate clinician sexual health treatment conversations and tools, as well as stories of hope and guidance so essential to individuals wanting to understand how sexual health can be the essential ally in changing their sexual behavior.

Passport To Shame written by Sam Louie and has been published by Central Recovery Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A psychotherapist's candid memoir of addiction and recovery, exploring the intersection of Asian culture, mental health, and assimilating into American culture as an ethnic minority. Sam Louie grew up torn between cultures as part of a first-generation Chinese immigrant family from Hong Kong living in a predominantly African American neighborhood in the United States. He experienced the duality of existence with the tension of two vastly different worldviews, his identity intertwined with the country he lives in and his ancestral ties. What traditions and cultural beliefs get preserved, what gets discarded, and what gets lost in translation? Beneath it all was the presence of three generations of addiction, trauma, and shame. In this bold, insightful book, he documents the challenges of immigrant experiences and how maladaptive coping mechanisms in the form of compulsive behaviors were a means to gain a sense of adequacy due to the cultural tide of shame and ostracism within his own ethnic heritage and the external world. Louie's journey of resiliency in navigating multiple cultural forces in the face of adversity and racism can give readers a new understanding of hope, perseverance, and the resources necessary to heal.

In this meticulously researched and masterfully written book, Pulitzer Prize-winner Deborah Blum examines the history of love through the lens of its strangest unsung hero: a brilliant, fearless, alcoholic psychologist named Harry Frederick Harlow. Pursuing the idea that human affection could be understood, studied, even measured, Harlow (1905-1981) arrived at his conclusions by conducting research-sometimes beautiful, sometimes horrible-on the primates in his University of Wisconsin laboratory. Paradoxically, his darkest experiments may have the brightest legacy, for by studying "neglect" and its life-altering consequences, Harlow confirmed love's central role in shaping not only how we feel but also how we think. His work sparked a psychological revolution. The more children experience affection, he discovered, the more curious they become about the world: Love makes people smarter. The biography of both a man and an idea, The Measure of Love is a powerful and at times disturbing narrative that will forever alter our understanding of human relationships.

It's been almost 20 years since poet, revolutionary, convict, and movie star, Tupac Amaru Shakur (a.k.a 2Pac, Makaveli, or simply 'pac), was gunned down at age 25 while he sat in traffic with Suge Knight near the Las Vegas Strip following a Mike Tyson fight at MGM Grand. In the new updated and expanded third edition of this acclaimed biography, Las Vegas crime writer Cathy Scott has finally been able to include the previously unpublished chapter featuring the account of that last fateful night from "Big Frank," the rapper's now-deceased personal bodyguard. The raw no-holds-barred narrative, which includes exclusive photo evidence (including of Tupac's autopsy), is the definitive account of the unsolved murder of Tupac Shakur: the many possible motives, the failed investigation, the rap wars, the killing of Biggie Smalls, the Bloods-Crips connection, the Suge Knight and Death Row Records association, and the subsequent fate of numerous principals involved in the aftermath. It is also a sensitive, candid, and insightful account of the contradictory icon who remains not only one of the most influential rappers ever but, with more than 75 million records sold worldwide, he's also one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The music of Tupac Shakur is the legacy of his life. The Killing of Tupac Shakur is the legacy of his death.

Machiavellians, better known as "master manipulators," are hardwired to lie, cheat, scheme, and betray. Compared to narcissists and psychopaths, they are poorly understood. But they are more numerous and can be just as destructive. From day to day, you'll encounter Machiavellian master manipulators, many times without even realizing it. At last there's a book that peels away their mask of deception and reveals the truth about these predators. Machiavellians: Gulling the Rubes explores the psychology of master manipulators, shows you how to recognize them, and reveals how you can beat them at their own game. Psychologist Dale Hartley introduces the Mach-20 test of Machiavellianism which anyone can take and score. He explains how you can outwit these amoral and conniving opportunists using "MADAR" - Machiavellian Advance Detection and Resistance - a set of skills and tactics you'll find invaluable. Master manipulators see other people as "rubes," ripe for exploitation. With this book you'll never be caught unprepared again. Based on Dr. Hartley's popular Psychology Today blog, this book features true cases of schemers, swindlers, stalkers, seducers, pathological liars, and con artists told in an entertaining narrative style. These true tales - some funny, some tragic, and some outrageous - reveal the truth about Machiavellian personalities. Editorial Reviews "In our unfortunate era of misinformation, we now have the essential tools needed to identify, and protect ourselves against, the wiles of common Machiavellians, con artists, seducers, swindlers, gaslighters, sandbaggers, and the like in Dale Hartley's masterpiece, Machiavellians: Gulling the Rubes. Our vision is cleared by this much awaited, modernized lens of Machiavellianism-of which we will find useful in virtually every social area of life."-John V.
