The Government of India remembered freedom fighters with Samman (Respect) Pension (1980). The Honorable Judges of the Supreme Court commented, "The object of the freedom fighters' pension scheme is not to reward or compensate the sacrifices made in the freedom struggle. The object is to honour and mitigate the sufferings of those who had given their all for the country in the hour of its need." This view was not shared by the Communist led Government of West Bengal (GOWB). The attitude of the GOWB can be seen through the correspondence between freedom fighter Gour Gopal Sarkar and the Office of the Chief Minister. He observed the reticence of the Chief Minister of West Bengal and the preoccupation of the GOWB engaged in anti-Delhi rhetoric and undemocratic activities such as, Gherao, Land seizure, Sunderbans (Mirichjhanpi) massacre and killing of Ananda Marga saints and nuns for spurious reasons. These landmark reasons that have pushed West Bengal back fourth world countries are covered in the book for posterity.According to Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), poverty in eight Indian states exceeded that of the 26 poorest African countries (1997) and West Bengal is the home of the third largest number of poor people in India. OPHI and UNDP define 'poverty as people's experience of deprivation from lack of income, lack of education, lack of basic sanitation and lack of access to nutritive food'. On these measures 80% of the people of West Bengal who live in villages would take the prime position in the able of poorest people in India. The freedom fighters who joined Mahatma Gandhi believed in his conviction, "Poverty is the worst form of Violence". Post-Independence development of India should have brought relief from poverty to all the people. What should be the matter of concern is that new found prosperity of India through globalizations is bypassing the 80% living in villages. Should our gestures of remembering the freedom fighters include the obligation of re-examining Gandhi's contribution to the world as 'People's Economist' and 'Inventor of Intermediate Technology'? Dr. Ernst Friedrich "Fritz" Schumacher is recognized as the most influential economic thinker, statistician and economist in the post-war years. His book; "Small is Beautiful, a study of economics as if people mattered" is regarded as one of the 100 most influential books published since World War II. Schumacher is the greatest advocate of Intermediate/Appropriate Technology. He said, "Gandhi is the greatest People's Economist". Gandhi's invention of the Spinning Wheel is regarded as the first example of Intermediate/Appropriate Technology. Can Appropriate Technology help the left-out citizens of free India to climb out of poverty? In the final chapters I have examined the case of applying Appropriate Technology to address the Wants of the Rural Population with practical Projects. If you feel any debt of gratitude to the freedom fighters and have the skill to apply technology to reshape poor people's experience of deprivation in villages, the projects described in the book may inspire you to identify business opportunities for someone looking towards you to give a kick-start to their lives.Thank you for considering to download my book.

Mũkami Kĩmathi: Mau Mau Woman Freedom Fighter is the story of the brave wife of one of Kenya’s foremost freedom fighters, Field Marshal Dedan Kĩmathi Waciũri. Kĩmathi led the Mau Mau war in Kenya’s independence struggle against the British colonialists. Mũkami’s role as a daughter, wife, mother, freedom fighter and leader is varied and very complex. Her story spans pre and post-independent Kenya. Her experiences provide an important complement to existing written literature on Kenya’s history. In 2003, the Mwai Kĩbakĩ Government lifted the ban put in place by the British colonialists declaring the Mau Mau as terrorists, and recognised Mũkami Kĩmathi and other freedom fighters as national heroes and heroines celebrated on 20th October as Mashujaa Day. This book gives an insight into the role of women freedom fighters and the struggles they faced both during and after the war. It is an incredible story of immense self-sacrifice and love for Kenya. Mũkami provides the lens to see the wider picture of women in the independence struggle, the neglect and betrayal of wives of Mau Mau fighters in particular and women in general in Kenya’s making. Beyond her role in the independence struggle, Mũkami’s story has many historical highlights such as time shared with Kĩmathi, meeting Nelson Mandela and her fruitful and strong relationship with Kenya’s human rights movement.

This work focuses on one of the most critical periods in the history of post-colonial Africa: the euphoric and turbulent sixties when most countries on the continent won independence and were confronted with the harsh realities of nationhood including nation building and consolidation of institutions of authority as well as their sovereign status. It was a period of high expectations. But it was also a decade of military coups and assassinations, a phenomenon that persisted for decades although there were fewer coups in the 1990s and beyond contrasted with what took place in the previous years, especially the sixties and seventies when the largest number of military coups and assassinations of national leaders took place. The author addresses many subjects in an attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of Africa in the sixties, a defining moment and probably the most critical period in the post-colonial era. Everything that has taken place on the continent through the decades is somehow connected to what happened in the sixties. A complementary volume, Africa in The Sixties, addresses similar subjects.

I was born in 1920, in a city called Aachen, also known as Aix-la Chapelle. It was one of the most tumultuous and significant periods in world history. World War One, "the war to end all wars" had just ended. It took less than twenty years for another war to ravage Europe and plaid havoc with the entire world. In this memoir, I have researched the origins of my family, dating back to the early 17th century in the German/Dutch region of Europe. I have examined how their lives, as Jews, were influenced by their times and how their experiences set the stage for the catastrophe that befell Europe in the 1940s. I discuss my personal experiences and how these tragic events turned my life upside down and how my outlook and my future were influenced. ZACHOR, let us remember together Kurt Rosendahl

At the time when the national movement was still in its early stages, Madan Mohan Malaviya emerged as an enigmatic but commanding figure in the political landscape of India. This work reconstructs Malaviya’s ideal of nationalism, which was composite, constructive and creative and offers a fresh perspective on an important period of modern India’s political history. Utilizing new and authentic source material, this book traces Malaviya’s role in the freedom struggle, the people who supported him, his relations with other established political leaders of the country within and outside of the Congress party and how he saw his own actions and role in public life. Taking Malaviya as a particular example of subcontinental leadership, Jagannath Prasad Misra studies the method and manner of Malaviya’s nationalist propaganda. He shows that rather than being a restraining influence, Malaviya’s faith in constitutional politics and educational advancement laid a solid foundation for the uplift of the nation.
