In the realm of second language learning and bilingual education, French Immersion has been praised for its innovative and highly successful pedagogical approach. Yet, many students who enroll in the program do not remain in it until its conclusion. The high drop-out rate is revealing some kind of malaise which needs to be investigated.Jeanne-Marie Mannavarayan, as a teacher of French Immersion, has encountered a number of students who experienced severe difficulties in the program, enough to prompt her to this in-depth research. She examines various problems some students encounter in Immersion programs, and challenges and questions the suitability of Immersion for every child. A detailed review of Immersion literature, as well as research from outside traditional education literature, exposes the controversy and ambiguity surrounding this issue. This study considers physiological and biological characteristics of learners, such as auditory ability, verbal memory and grammatical sensitivity, which affect first language proficiency, and may explain second language learning difficulties. It also examines such issues as learners' personal goals, emotional needs, internal dynamics and intrinsic aspiration.

Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0 (B), University of Duisburg-Essen (Institute for Foreign Language Philology - Anglistics/American Studies), course: Advanced Seminar: Bilingualism, 17 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Introduction French Immersion in Canada has long been considered as one of the most efficient programs to promote “real” bilingualism. A lot of research has been carried out in that field and mainly stated positive results for this special way of learning a second language. But if one goes deeper into the literature concerned with that subject, one encounters more and more critical voices doubting the proverbial effectiveness of these programs. This paper shall provide a critical evaluation of the findings, research provided in respect to the effectiveness of immersion programs in Canada. Furthermore, proposals for new teaching techniques, which shall make the immersion classroom more efficient, will be described and evaluated. At the beginning of this paper, a short introduction to immersion education is given, including a definition of the term “immersion” and a presentation of the key features of Canadian Immersion Education, followed by an abstract of the history of immersion education in chapter 2. The following section describes the conception of different types of immersion programs, along with findings concerning their effectiveness. This shall help the reader to gain a complete picture of the pros and cons of a specific type of program. The main part of this paper (chapter 4) starts with a critical evaluation of the results presented in previous chapters and tries to assess whether these programs are a suitable tool for the acquisition of native-like performance in a second language. Chapter 5 offers a selection of four different teaching methods which can make – if they are applied correctly – the immersion classroom more efficient. The paper concludes with a summary of the most important results, trying to provide a critical evaluation of immersion as such. [...]

In French Immersion Ideologies in Canada, Sylvie Roy gives voice to people who have experiences with French immersion programs in Alberta, Canada. Using a sociolinguistics for change approach, she interprets questions related to language ideologies, as well as reasons people learn French as an additional language and why some students are asked to learn English first. She also reflects on what it means to become or to be bilingual or multilingual in a globalized world. Roy discusses teachers’ and learners’ linguistic and cultural practices and examines transculturality for the future. By questioning concepts that recur in participants’ narratives, this book explores how power is reproduced, who is marginalized in the process, and what can be done to deconstruct ideologies about learning and teaching French in Canada and in the world. Roy demonstrates complex issues related to the French language and their consequences for learners, parents, teachers, and administrators.

This book reports the findings of an extensive research project on the acquisition of the native norms of spoken French variation by French immersion students who have learnt their second language primarily in an educational context. The project focused on a range of phonetic, lexical and grammatical sociolinguistic variants documented in studies of contemporary first language varieties of spoken French, and assessed the extent to which the students master the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors which govern variant choice. The book also discusses pedagogical strategies to improve the students' mastery of spoken French variation. The book represents an important contribution to an under-researched aspect of advanced Second Language Acquisition in an institutional setting.
