While many of the selections have been taken directly from the. Original sources, and have not heretofore appeared in any similar work, so far as the author is aware, it is equally true that many of the articles have been selected by other compilers, and by long usage in the schools of France, and to some extent in this country, have received the seal of public approbation. It IS 1ndeed quite obvious that a selection carefully made from the 'best authors, with a view to the exclusion of every article selected by others, can be, at best. Although deconstruction has become a popular catchword, as an intellectual movement it has never entirely caught on within the university. For some in the academy, deconstruction, and Jacques Derrida in particular, are responsible for the demise of accountability in the study of literature. Countering these facile dismissals of Derrida and deconstruction, Herman Rapaport explores the incoherence that has plagued critical theory since the 1960s and the resulting legitimacy crisis in the humanities. Against the backdrop of a rich, informed discussion of Derrida's writings -- and how they have been misconstrued by critics and admirers alike -- The Theory Mess investigates the vicissitudes of Anglo-American criticism over the past thirty years and proposes some possibilities for reform.

By examining nearly sixty works, the author traces the prehistory of the French prose poem, demonstrating that the disquiet of some eighteenth-century writers with the Enlightenment gave rise to the genre nearly a century before it is habitually supposed to have existed. In the throes of momentous scientific, philosophical, and socioeconomic changes, Enlightenment authors turned to the past to revive sources such as Homer, the pastoral, Ossian, the Bible, and primitive eloquence, favoring music to construct alternatives to the world of reason. The result, the author argues, were prose poems, including F lon's Les Adventures de T maque, Montesquieu's Le Temple de Gnide, Rousseau's Le L te d'Ephraïm, Chateaubriand's Atala, as well as many lesser-known texts, most of which remain out of print. The author's treatment of Bible criticism and eighteenth-century religious reform movements reveal the often-neglected spiritual side of Enlightenment culture, and tracks its contribution to the period's reflection about language and poetic invention. The author includes in appendices four unusual texts adjudicating the merits of prose poems, making evidence of their controversial nature now accessible to readers.

Excerpt from Anthology Of French Prose And Poetry The use of anthologies as an introduction to the general study of literature, and also as a preparation for an appreciative reading of complete texts, is rapidly growing in favor. They have for a long time been used on the continent, and were recently recommended by an international congress which met at Paris. They introduce the student to works with which he may, later on, be inclined to cultivate a more intimate acquaint ance. By enabling the student to pass, in a brief interval, from the tragedy of Corneille, for example, to that of Racine, from Moli're's comedy to the comedy of Marivaux and Beaumarchais, from the prose of Rousseau to that of Bernardin de Saint - Pierre and Chateaubriand, they give him, if not a complete, at least a first-hand idea of the succession of schools of writers and of the development of the methods of composition in poetry and prose. They also encourage him to appreciate the beauty and perfection of individual pages and even paragraphs, independent of the development of the plot. And the experience in our own classes has convinced us that, for American students, to whom it is desired to give, at the same time, proficiency in reading different styles of varied degrees of difficulty and some real acquaintance with the foreign authors themselves, with their style and their thought, the use of anthologies is of the greatest importance.
