Scientific experiments using animals have contributed significantly to the improvement of human health. Animal experiments were crucial to the conquest of polio, for example, and they will undoubtedly be one of the keystones in AIDS research. However, some persons believe that the cost to the animals is often high. Authored by a committee of experts from various fields, this book discusses the benefits that have resulted from animal research, the scope of animal research today, the concerns of advocates of animal welfare, and the prospects for finding alternatives to animal use. The authors conclude with specific recommendations for more consistent government action.

Psychoneuroimmunology, Second Edition presents reports on the relationship between the nervous and immune systems. The book is divided into four sections. The first section details the role of neural structures and neurotransmitter signals in communication with the immune system. It documents the extensive neural connections with organs of the immune system; the dynamics of noradrenergic sympathetic innervation of spleen and thymus; and the evidence for immune signaling of the CNS. Part II elaborates the role of hormones in the modulation of immune functions; the basis for bidirectional communication between the neuroendocrine and immune systems; and the potential physiological implications of these neuroendocrine-immune system interactions. The third part addresses behavioral influences on immune response; the effects of conditioning, stress and social interactions in modulating immune responses; and the behavioral consequences of experimentally altered or genetically determined immunologic states. The final section presents the effects of psychosocial factors on immune responses and the potential impact of behavioral interventions in modulating immunity in healthy human subjects and in patients with AIDS. Neuroscientists, endocrinologists, and immunologists will find the book interesting.

Allergy categories.

The break on immune tolerance is a common point between autoimmune diseases and the uncontrolled effector immune responses against allo-antigens in transplantation. Among the past years, several approaches to restore a suppressive immune state have included the targeting of co-stimulatory/inhibitory molecules on immune cells, the promotion or blockade of pivotal cytokines, and the extensive study on how to isolate and expand suppressive cells with the purpose to re-infuse them in patients. To date, the availability of new technologies has permitted to learn, in a more detailed way, the immune mechanisms carried out by suppressive lymphocytes, together with the identification of new potential candidates to target in our quest for immune tolerance. For example, the attractive concepts of lymphocyte plasticity and function stability, supported by the finding of new transcription factors, have opened a new window in the understanding of T cell differentiation, effector cell commitment and immune regulatory function. On the other hand, the discovery of new members of the Ig superfamily ligand, VISTA; the intriguing role of modulatory molecules like Retinoic Acid, Neuropilin-1, Fc gamma receptors, or cytokines such as IL-33, among others, are revealing new possibilities in the development of new strategies to conquer our obsession: immune tolerance. Here, we gather the latest information regarding new targets and cellular processes, including an update on current cellular therapies and the exciting coming approaches to cure autoimmunity and permit transplant acceptance.

Fundamentals of the Physical Therapy Examination: Patient Interview and Tests & Measures introduces physical therapy students to essential screening and examination techniques that form the foundation of their practice, across all body systems. It then builds on the foundational knowledge and helps students develop clinical decision-making skills. Experienced clinicians make numerous and rapid decisions about what questions to ask during a patient interview, what systems need to be screened for problems that lie outside the scope of physical therapy, and what tests and measures must be performed during an initial patient examination. Physical therapy students and some new graduates often struggle with this decision-making process and answering the "why" questions. This text provides the reader with fundamental, step-by-step approach to the subjective and objective portions of the examination process for a broad spectrum of patients within the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, integumentary, and cardiopulmonary realms (according to the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice). Ample rationale is provided for why a test/measure would or would not be selected based on the patient's diagnosis or presentation. In addition to rationale to help with the clinical decision-making process, case examples and sample documentation will also be provided. Each new textbook includes access to an extensive array of online videos demonstrating the "how to" for a wide variety of fundamental physical therapy tests and measures, such as gross strength testing, various sensory tests, reflex assessment, and examples of a number of abnormal gait patterns. Also included in the videos are two complete patient examinations (interview and tests/measures), one musculoskeletal and one neurological.
