The issue of differences between translational language and native-speaker language has become a topic of increasing interest in linguistics and Translation Studies (TS). One of the primary tasks in this research area is to employ a corpus approach and analyse collocations with authentic language data by comparing comparable corpora consisting of translated and native-speaker texts. Collocation in linguistics and TS refers to the relationship of co-occurrence between lexical items. The book shows that examining the use of collocations constitutes an integral part in assessing the naturalness of second language (L2) use, and therefore can be a valid measure to make a distinction between translational language and native-speaker language. Nevertheless, the role of collocation has not been given enough attention or discussed systematically in TS and, to date, there are hardly any translation theorists who have clarified the mechanism of collocation in TS, by which translators acquire receptive and productive knowledge of collocations in their L2. In addition, previous research in this area is largely confined to Indo-European languages, resulting in a lack of empirical evidence involving Asian languages. This book therefore attempts to bridge the gap in the literature and constitute an integral part in the research area.

Under the perspective of the Embodied Language of Cognition (Glenberg, 1997; Barsalou, 1999; Anderson, 2003), this book proposes a theoretical framework (hypothesis): the form-meaning relation in language shall be a three-dimensional interactive relation between body (the sensory-motor system) — brain (the mental network of the experiential knowledge) — form (the language expression system), rather than be a two dimensional relation between meaning and form. The main objective of the present book is to test the feasibility of the “body—brain—form” approach, i.e., whether it can effectively explain the cognitive operation and the usage-distribution of the language system. Taking the obtaining event as an example, this book builds a corpus of obtaining verbs and constructions, and uses the “Body—Brain—Form” approach to explain the three-dimensional construal processes from the source of specific “meanings”, i.e., the sensory-motor practices, to specific constructions, with brain experiential knowledge being the joint between the two. The quantitative analysis proves the rationality and accuracy of this approach in predicting the usage distribution of different obtaining constructions. Besides, the Cognitive Event Frame (Cheng, 2019, 2020) is also adopted to formulate the core and elaborated conceptual contents of different events, proving the efficiency and flexibility of this approach in formulizing the contents of the experiential knowledge network.

The view of exemplar-based second language learning emphasizes the importance of frequency in learning grammar. According to this view, type frequency rather than token frequency contributes to learning generalized knowledge beyond item-based constructions. This book investigates how frequency in experiencing exemplars affects the learning of the English primary verb be by junior high school students in Japan. The study consists of a quasi-experiment and stimulated-recall analysis of the data. The quasi-experiment compares three kinds of output practice: practice with increased type frequency, practice with increased token frequency, and practice without increased frequency. The experiment also explores how the frequency effects relate to the extent of explicit knowledge about the target structures. In the stimulated-recall analysis, learners engaging in the type frequency practice and those engaging in the token frequency practice are compared in terms of thought processes employed while practicing. The book discusses how frequency promotes classroom second language learning by taking the role of awareness of form-meaning connections into consideration.
